Software Engineer II, Integrated Genomics

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center•New York, NY
•$100,600 - $161,000•Onsite

About The Position

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center’s Integrated Genomics Operation (IGO) is seeking a Software Engineer to join its Data and Software Engineering Team. The role helps design, build, and support platforms that capture, organize, and deliver genomic data for cancer research. The engineer collaborates with a small full-stack team and the Senior Software Engineer leading the team, receiving mentorship while contributing to production-grade systems used by researchers and clinicians. The position supports genomic workflows and platforms including a laboratory information management system (LIMS), data-archiving pipelines, and internal delivery APIs. It involves building user interfaces and contributing to back-end services, testing and maintaining software, participating in engineering workflows, troubleshooting data-intensive systems, and working with wet-lab scientists to translate their needs into technical solutions. AI-assisted development tools are used thoughtfully to improve development speed, code quality, and test coverage while upholding strong engineering standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, or a related technical field, or 2–4 years of relevant experience.
  • At least 2 years of experience building software through professional work, internships, research, or substantial personal or open-source projects.
  • Familiarity with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript/TypeScript.
  • Exposure to back-end development using Java, Python, or Node.js.
  • Understanding of REST or GraphQL APIs.
  • Basic knowledge of SQL and relational databases such as MySQL or PostgreSQL.
  • Comfort working in a Linux environment and using command-line tools.
  • Excellent communication skills with technical and non-technical partners.
  • Curiosity, a growth-oriented attitude, and eagerness to learn from mentorship.
  • Collaborative approach, including pairing and code review.
  • Ability to use AI-assisted tools thoughtfully while maintaining independent problem-solving skills.
  • Customer-focused orientation and motivation to improve scientist and analyst workflows.
  • Organized, reliable, and able to spearhead work in a fast-paced research environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience with React preferred.
  • Interest in genomics, bioinformatics, or scientific/healthcare data; preferred but not required.
  • Experience with AI coding assistants, or interest in learning to use them effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with a small team of full-stack engineers to design, develop, and maintain software supporting genomic workflows.
  • Implement features and fixes for platforms including the LIMS, data-archiving pipelines, and internal delivery APIs.
  • Build user interfaces using React, JavaScript, and TypeScript, and contribute to back-end services in Node.js, Python, and/or Java.
  • Write clean, maintainable code and contribute to unit, integration, and end-to-end testing.
  • Participate in design discussions, code reviews, and GitHub-based development workflows.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot systems in a data-intensive environment and help improve performance and reliability.
  • Work with wet-lab scientists to translate their needs into technical solutions.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools to increase development speed, code quality, and test coverage while maintaining strong engineering standards.
