About The Position
Hamilton Lane is seeking a Senior Database Administrator to support its technology platforms, including Cobalt, an analytics and diligence platform for private markets. The role works across data sources and systems to deliver value to internal and external technology solutions. It is a mid-career position on an entrepreneurial, collaborative team, with opportunities to contribute to platform architecture, mentor colleagues, guide best practices, and collaborate across teams. The DBA will primarily administer Snowflake and SQL Server, including Azure SQL Managed Instance and Managed Instance Pools, and may extend support to other business systems as priorities evolve. The role partners with the Cobalt business unit to meet database, data platform, and operational needs.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of experience as a Database Administrator, including at least 3 years of hands-on experience each with Snowflake and SQL Server.
- Expert knowledge of Snowflake architecture, clustering, data sharing, and security features.
- Strong working knowledge of SQL Server and Azure SQL Managed Instance administration, including Managed Instance Pools: provisioning, sizing, networking, high availability, and security.
- Strong SQL and T-SQL skills and query optimization experience.
- Understanding of cloud infrastructure and data warehouse design patterns.
- Experience with backup and recovery and disaster recovery planning.
- Knowledge of ETL/ELT tools, enterprise job schedulers, and data pipeline management.
- Familiarity with version control and CI/CD practices for database changes.
Nice To Haves
- Experience with Azure SQL Database and migrating on-premises SQL Server workloads to Managed Instance Pools.
- Experience with Tidal Scheduler or comparable enterprise workload automation tools.
- Snowflake certification (SnowPro Core or Administrator) and/or Microsoft certification (such as Azure Database Administrator Associate).
- Knowledge of BI tools such as Tableau, Looker, or Power BI.
- Experience with Python or other scripting languages for automation.
- Familiarity with data governance and metadata management tools.
- Exposure to financial services or private markets data environments, including Hamilton Lane's Cobalt.
Responsibilities
- Serve as primary DBA for Snowflake and SQL Server, including Azure SQL Managed Instance and Managed Instance Pools, with potential support for other critical business systems such as Tidal scheduler.
- Monitor database performance, query efficiency, and resource utilization; optimize queries, warehouse configurations, SQL Server indexing and execution plans, and instance and pool resource utilization.
- Manage user access, roles, and security policies in alignment with organizational compliance requirements.
- Establish and execute backup, disaster recovery, high availability, and business continuity procedures.
- Oversee data-loading processes (ELT/ETL) and job scheduling, including Tidal, and ensure data quality and integrity.
- Optimize costs through warehouse sizing, clustering strategies, Managed Instance Pool and vCore sizing, licensing, and resource allocation.
- Coordinate platform upgrades and apply patches while minimizing downtime.
- Document database schemas, configurations, standards, and operational procedures.
- Provide technical support to developers, analysts, and end users, and mentor the team on best practices.
- Monitor and respond to system alerts and incidents, and maintain uptime SLAs.
- Partner with the Cobalt business unit to support its database, data platform, and operational needs.
