Sr. Database Administrator

ConstructConnect•Atlanta, GA
•Hybrid

About The Position

The Sr. Database Administrator is the principal technical authority for ConstructConnect’s database platforms, supporting a 24/7 hybrid on-premises and cloud environment that includes SQL Server 2012–2025, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Azure SQL, and AWS RDS. This technical lead role owns the infrastructure beneath the databases, including high-availability and clustering platforms, disaster recovery, database security and SOX compliance, performance monitoring, and capacity planning. It has no direct reports. The role establishes database engineering standards by reviewing schemas, developing and refactoring stored procedures, and guiding engineering teams on query optimization and data access patterns. The administrator also supports cloud migrations and hybrid infrastructure improvements, helps prepare platforms for AI-driven workloads such as vector search and high-concurrency data access, and participates in an after-hours on-call rotation.

Requirements

  • At least 6 years of database administration experience, including at least 4 years administering Microsoft SQL Server (2017–2025) in a 24/7 production environment.
  • Hands-on experience building and supporting WSFCs and FCIs.
  • Hands-on experience designing, implementing, and supporting Availability Groups.
  • Hands-on experience with log shipping and transactional replication.
  • Proven ownership of disaster recovery planning, backup and restore operations, and disaster recovery testing.
  • Experience implementing and maintaining database security controls in a SOX-compliant environment.
  • Working knowledge of the infrastructure database platforms depend on, including Windows Server, storage, networking, and virtualization.
  • Experience hosting databases in cloud environments such as Google Cloud, AWS, or Azure.
  • Working familiarity with PostgreSQL administration.
  • Strong command of Transact-SQL, stored procedures, functions, triggers, and SQL Agent automation.
  • Proficiency with database performance monitoring and tuning.
  • Scripting and automation experience using PowerShell, dbatools, or equivalent.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with developers and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Technical lead experience and ability to work as both a leader and an individual contributor.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience administering MySQL, Azure SQL, or AWS RDS.
  • Experience with SolarWinds or Idera monitoring platforms.
  • Experience with Cohesity or similar enterprise backup platforms.
  • Experience using Change Data Capture (CDC) for incremental data loads.
  • Experience using source control such as GitLab for database scripts and schema changes.
  • Experience using AI coding assistants in day-to-day engineering work.
  • Familiarity with Jira for task and incident tracking.

Responsibilities

  • Administer and maintain SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Azure SQL, and AWS RDS environments in a 24/7 production setting.
  • Architect, build, and operate Windows Server Failover Clusters (WSFCs) and SQL Server Failover Clustered Instances (FCIs), including shared storage, quorum, networking, patching, and failover testing.
  • Design, implement, and troubleshoot Availability Groups (AGs) across on-premises and cloud environments, including listeners, synchronization health, and planned and unplanned failover.
  • Configure and maintain log shipping and transactional replication, monitor latency, resolve replication errors, and manage publisher, distributor, and subscriber components.
  • Design and provision relational database environments, including instance configuration, storage layout, high-availability and clustering architecture, backup strategy, and security design.
  • Own disaster recovery and backup strategies, including cross-site recovery using Distributed AGs and log shipping, and design, test, and document recovery plans.
  • Lead database security and compliance efforts, including SOX controls, internal audit requirements, and access management.
  • Monitor and optimize database performance using SolarWinds and Idera, and proactively identify and resolve bottlenecks.
  • Plan database capacity across platforms and forecast storage, compute, and licensing needs.
  • Automate routine administration, including patching, health checks, deployments, and provisioning, using PowerShell, dbatools, and infrastructure-as-code tooling.
  • Design and review database schemas, stored procedures, functions, and triggers to meet business requirements.
  • Partner with development teams on query optimization, indexing strategies, data access patterns, and source-controlled schema change management.
  • Maintain runbooks and documentation for high availability, disaster recovery, and recovery procedures.
  • Manage and track database-related tasks and incidents using Jira.
  • Participate in the on-call rotation for after-hours production database issues.
  • Provide technical mentorship and day-to-day guidance to DBA and engineering team members.
  • Evaluate and support cloud database migrations and hybrid infrastructure improvements.
  • Use AI coding assistants such as Claude Code and GitHub Copilot to accelerate administration, scripting, and troubleshooting.
  • Ensure database platforms are ready for AI-driven application workloads, including vector search and high-concurrency data access.
