About The Position

The College and Career Advisor for the Young Adult Borough Center works directly with students to develop individualized plans for academic success, career readiness, and post-secondary achievement. This role provides comprehensive guidance and support to help participants identify and pursue their college and career goals, while connecting them to the resources and skills needed to thrive personally and professionally.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work, or a related field.
  • Minimum 3 years of direct service experience working with youth and young adults in academic advisement, counseling, intervention, or youth development.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Effective conflict resolution skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Satisfactory background check, fingerprint clearance, and health screening.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual in Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Bengali, or other languages relevant to community needs.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor student academic progress and attendance; communicate with relevant school personnel and schedule timely interventions to support high school graduation.
  • Collaborate with NYCPS School Guidance Counselors to align support strategies and promote student academic success.
  • Assess student skills, interests, and goals through individual interviews and group activities; develop personalized academic and college/career plans.
  • Advocate for students’ rights and well-being, while equipping them with self-advocacy skills.
  • Educate and advise students and families on post-secondary options including college, technical programs, and employment pathways.
  • Maintain and share up-to-date resources on colleges, scholarships, financial aid, and college preparation guides.
  • Participate in and help facilitate college visits, career exploration activities, school trips, and program events.
  • Build and maintain relationships with schools, employers, and professional organizations to expand student opportunities.
  • Provide timely intervention and support for issues that may prevent a student from functioning effectively in school; refer to mental health services as needed.
  • Engage and sustain relationships with family members to address barriers impacting student performance and success.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
