About The Position

Bethel University is seeking an Events Audio Technician to be the creative force behind the sound of its campus. This role involves leading audio engineering for weekly Chapel and Vespers, major Music and Drama productions, and other campus events. The technician will manage and maintain digital audio, lighting, and AVL networks, and mentor a dedicated team of student technicians. This position is a primary audio technical campus partner, ensuring the university's mission is heard through high-quality spiritual environments and technical precision in performing arts events. The ideal candidate is a tech-savvy problem solver with a heart for ministry, bringing a "can-do" spirit to a Christ-centered community.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 2+ years of experience in live audio, video, lighting (AVL), and technical networking.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate, troubleshoot, and maintain integrated AVL and network systems.
  • Proficient in both analog and digital audio mixing for varied environments (worship, theater, and conferences).
  • Ability to program and configure digital audio systems and Dante-based networks.
  • Skilled in audio recording software for capturing and post-production media distribution.
  • Competent in patching and protocols, including DMX, RDM, and IP.
  • Working knowledge of LED pixel mapping, basic videography, and presentation software such as ProPresenter and Keynote.
  • A "quick learner" who can stay current with evolving production technologies.
  • Professional written and verbal communication skills for collaborating with internal team, campus partners, and external vendors.
  • Ability to climb ladders, spiral staircases, catwalk areas, and stationary clouds at very high heights.
  • Ability to rig equipment above audience seating areas.
  • Ability to load, set up, strike, and unload event equipment.
  • Ability to perform movements such as bending, squatting, stooping, kneeling, climbing stairs, pushing/pulling up to 75 pounds, reaching above shoulder level, waist twisting, carrying/lifting up to 50 pounds, gripping/grasping, and repetitive hand and arm movements.
  • Ability to access areas that are not ADA-compliant.

Nice To Haves

  • An associate’s degree in Live Production, Audio Engineering, or a related field.
  • Relevant technical certifications (e.g., Dante, CTS, or manufacturer-specific training).
  • Experience with or exposure to Extron, HiQnet Audio Architect, or Python.
  • Ability to configure and manage AV-specific networks.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary audio engineer for weekly Chapel and Vespers services and other campus events, collaborating with ministry leaders to ensure high-quality spiritual environments.
  • Lead audio production for major Music & Drama departmental events, including the Festival of Christmas, Operas, and Musicals; serve as the primary liaison for external professional recording companies.
  • Coordinate with the Conference and Events Services team to provide comprehensive audio and technical support for internal events and external facility rentals.
  • Perform regular evaluations and maintenance of all sound systems within assigned areas; Identify and recommend necessary repairs or upgrades.
  • Manage and optimize technical networks supporting Audio, Lighting, and Video systems to ensure seamless connectivity and performance.
  • Collaborate with the manager to review and finalize weekly student schedules, ensuring adequate technical coverage for all campus events.
  • Conduct hands-on training for student workers, equipping them with the technical skills necessary to support university productions.
  • Actively participate in creating our Christ-centered community by agreeing with and abiding by our core beliefs in the Affirmation of Faith and supporting all other beliefs as Biblical, responsible, and thoughtful approaches while avoiding dissension and divisiveness.
  • Teach and mentor students and help one another uphold our Community Covenant commitments.
  • Act as a minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ by actively partnering with the University to carry out its mission and foster Bethel’s Christ-centered covenant community.
