About The Position

The University of Ottawa Library is seeking an innovative, motivated, and service-oriented Collections Strategy Librarian for a temporary replacement position. The ideal candidate is creative and adaptable, thriving in a stimulating and evolving environment. Currently, the role primarily focuses on collection maintenance for physical materials, collection analysis, and deselection projects. The University of Ottawa is a nationally and internationally recognized top research university, the largest bilingual (French and English) university globally, located on the traditional and unceded territory of the Anishinaabe-Algonquin people in downtown Ottawa.

Requirements

  • A Master's degree in Library and Information Sciences (MLIS) from an institution that has been accredited by the American Library Association or equivalent.
  • At least 2 years of related professional experience, or fewer if the experience is particularly pertinent to the position.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills in both French and English.
  • Knowledge of collection development principles, practices and trends, e.g. licensing models, budget management, collection assessment, and consortial collection strategies.
  • Knowledge of the scholarly communications and publishing landscape, and its relationship to collections strategy.
  • Understanding of the role of library collections in supporting the academic mission of the university, and the diverse ways in which the collection is used.
  • Advanced ability to use a variety of collection-related tools, systems, and datasets to conduct large scale collections assessment and analysis using various data sets.
  • Strong analytical skills, including the ability to interpret complex data from multiple sources and develop strategies to support evidence-based collections decisions.
  • Ability to analyze complex issues and exercise sound judgement in decision making.
  • Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively in a team-based environment.
  • Demonstrated adaptability, initiative and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to identify opportunities for improvement and develop practical, innovative solutions.

  • Project management experience, including planning, organizing, and managing resources to achieve objectives within a specific time frame.

Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively within a team environment and contribute to group decision making and planning for the strategic development, management, and evaluation of the University of Ottawa Library’s collections across all subject areas and formats.
  • Contribute to the development of collection-related policies to ensure that the university community has access to world-class scholarly content and collections.
  • Assess, evaluate, and analyze the Library collection, using quantitative and qualitative data, to support evidence-based decision making, which may include managing large data sets across various systems.
  • Contribute to the University of Ottawa’s participation in shared initiatives by contributing to large scale collection development and analysis; identifying gaps and overlaps in our collection in conjunction with other libraries and initiatives.
  • Participate in a variety of projects, which may include, but are not limited to, collection maintenance, evaluations of major in-kind donations, annual subscription reviews, weeding projects, and the development and maintenance of approval plans.
  • Actively participate in and/or lead Library collaborative activities within the Library and across campus.
  • Contribute to an evolving organization values service excellence, innovation, outreach, and partnership.
