About The Position

This role involves developing, coordinating, monitoring, and managing the institution’s safety programs. The specialist is responsible for fire prevention, safety, health, hazardous material/communication, occupational safety regulations, and sanitation. Key aspects of the job include managing the institutional inspection program, conducting employee fire and safety training, and coordinating with local, state, and federal agencies for required reports. The position also requires maintaining necessary documentation to comply with Department of Corrections (DOC) standards and assisting with pest control at the institution.

Requirements

  • General knowledge of safety and environmental regulations and principles, techniques, laws and regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and present institutional plans and programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach/train in a classroom setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to efficiently delegate.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience related to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Virginia Department of Fire Programs (VDFP) regulations.
  • Experience preparing reports.
  • Previous experience working in corrections.
  • Experience with Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations.
  • Certification in OSHA field or other local, state, and federal safety program.
  • working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, and Excel).
