About The Position

The Assistant Teacher II supports special educators and therapists serving a varied student population in a full-day rehabilitation setting. The role supports students’ educational needs during rehabilitation stays, which may include instruction on schoolwork, implementation of an Individualized Education Program (IEP) when applicable, and support of each student’s rehabilitation treatment plan. The incumbent adapts instruction to students’ individual academic, medical, developmental, and technological needs and manages classroom routines, including arrival, meals, dismissal, greeting families, and orienting students to their schedules. The role consistently implements behavioral plans and independently carries out teacher duties and responsibilities under the direction of the Educational Transition Therapist as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • At least one year of experience in a classroom setting required.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience working with children with developmental disabilities is highly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • In cooperation with the supervising teacher, plan and implement instruction in accordance with each student’s IEP and rehabilitation and treatment plan, using strategies for academic and behavioral success.
  • Complete instructional-related duties assigned by supervising teachers and administrators.
  • Implement behavioral protocols and assignments during instructional and non-instructional times.
  • Participate in and contribute professionally and collegially to in-service training and staff meetings.
  • Provide support and leadership for curricular and extracurricular activities that promote a positive Fairmount Rehabilitation Program experience.
  • Assist with implementing technology in instructional design and delivery as directed by the supervising teacher.
  • Identify changes in students’ physical, health, or emotional status and report them to the nurse.
  • Perform direct-care duties, including assisting with arrival and dismissal, hygiene and dressing needs, daily schedules and communication needs, and meals.
  • Assist with programmatic and clerical functions, including arranging patient transportation, organizing therapeutic outings, and setting up, maintaining, and cleaning patient treatment areas before and after treatment sessions.
  • Provide independent instruction, supervision, and classroom management when the supervising teacher is absent.
  • Cover Rehabilitation Aide/Tech duties as needed.
