An ophthalmic technician at Great Plains Health prepares patients for ophthalmologist appointments by performing various tasks. These include measuring visual acuity, tonometry, refraction, and eye drop instillation for routine exams. The technician also completes specialty testing such as optical coherence tomography (OCT), fundus photography, corneal topography, optical biometry, and visual field testing. They are responsible for recording information using an Electronic Health Record (EHR) and assisting the ophthalmologist in scribing findings during exams. Technicians obtain patient histories, explain post-operative procedures, and answer patient questions. Additionally, they perform office duties like maintaining stock in exam rooms and technician areas and processing prescription refill requests. While they do not assist in the operating room, they do assist with minor, in-office procedures such as laser treatments, lid lesion removals, and foreign body removals.
