The Certified Surgical Technologist functions under the direction of the registered professional nurse, assisting the healthcare team in providing safe, age-appropriate, and culturally aware patient care. This role requires knowledge, skill, and ability to perform duties within the context of moderate to high acuity surgical cases, with an expectation to work above this level as cases require. The technologist must anticipate the needs of the surgeon and other healthcare team members, exhibit an acquisition of additional surgical skills for progressively more difficult cases, and demonstrate an efficient, organized surgical plan. Responsibilities include troubleshooting instruments and equipment, anticipating required supplies, and participating in performance improvement initiatives. Duties also encompass preparing the operative suite and surgical field to ensure a safe patient care environment, maintaining the sterile field, gathering instruments and supplies, and serving as a surgical assistant as needed (not a certified surgical first assistant). Other tasks include assisting with inventory, ordering, stocking ORs and perioperative areas, and ensuring compliance with Joint Commission standards. Call or late coverage may be required. A Certified Surgical Technologist must hold a certificate or associate's degree from an accredited community college or technical school and have passed a competency examination through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or National Center for Competency Testing.
