About The Position

Under the direct supervision of an RN, the Surgical Tech assists the surgical team as the primary scrub person, handling instruments, supplies, and equipment during surgical procedures. The role provides safe patient care by verifying patient identification and ensuring necessary instrumentation, supplies, equipment, and implants are present. The Surgical Tech follows aseptic practices to protect patients, minimize wound contamination, and reduce the risk of surgical site infection. The position also requires problem-solving, responding appropriately to emergencies or procedural changes, anticipating the surgeon’s needs, and accurately managing counts, medication labeling, and specimen handling. Cross-training and rotation to other clinical areas in Perioperative Services may be needed.

Requirements

• Meet at least one of the Connecticut regulatory qualification pathways for performing surgical technology services: complete a nationally accredited surgical technology program and maintain certification from a Department of Public Health-recognized national certifying body within six months of hire; complete an accredited program and obtain certification within 18 months of program completion or six months of hire; have performed surgical technology services in a health care facility on or before October 1, 2023, with prior experience documented by the facility; complete a surgical technology training program in the U.S. Armed Forces, National Guard, or U.S. Public Health Service; or be designated competent by the facility based on specialized training or specific experience.
• BLS certification is required.

Responsibilities

• Assist the surgical team as the primary scrub person, handling instruments, supplies, and equipment during procedures under the direct supervision of an RN.
• Verify patient identification and ensure necessary instrumentation, supplies, equipment, and implants are present.
• Follow aseptic practices to protect patients, minimize wound contamination, and reduce surgical site infection risk.
• Problem-solve in relation to the procedure and respond appropriately to emergencies or changes in procedure.
• Demonstrate attention to detail and anticipate the surgeon’s needs during surgical procedures.
• Accurately count sponges, sharps, and instruments; correctly label medications on the sterile field; and correctly handle and label specimens.
• Cross-train and rotate to other clinical areas in Perioperative Services as needed.
