Requirements

• Possess a valid Class "E" driver’s license.
• Obtain a Class "B" CDL Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to position.
• Obtain a valid Class "B" CDL with air brakes within 10 months of appointment.
• While on-duty status, the positions incumbent must be readily available to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of Commercial Driver's License (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety-sensitive functions.
• Obtains certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) - Intermediate Level within one year and maintains.
• Required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.
• Required to be responsive to emergency situations within a very short timeframe and serve in the Transportation Emergency Management Team.
• Requires one year of experience operating small/medium equipment and vehicles.
• A Class E driver's license is required at time of hire.
• A CDL Class B License Instructional Permit is required within 60 days of appointment to the position.
• Obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months of appointment.
• Must have an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.
• Applicants must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug and Alcohol (FMCSA) Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a pre-employment query.
• Must meet the qualifications outlined in Title 49 CFR Part 391.11.
• Must provide your Social Security Number to conduct required verifications.
• Male applicants born on or after October 1, 1962, must be registered with the Selective Service System (SSS) before their 26th birthday, or have a Letter of Registration Exemption from the SSS.

• If the employee voluntarily separates from the Department within two (2) years of obtaining their CDL, the employee will be responsible for paying the costs of the initial training and testing.

Responsibilities

• Operates vehicles and a variety of small and medium equipment that may include, but not limited to; front end loader, skid steer loader, grader, lift equipment, small bulldozer and asphalt repair truck while performing bridge and roadway maintenance.
• Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated and assists in the repairs of this equipment; checks and adds fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc.
• Cleans and washes equipment.
• Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways.
• Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments with minimal supervision.
• Performs tree trimming, rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
• Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
• Assists with crew activity reports as needed.
