Student Nurse Externship - Winter 2026 Program

About The Position
Boone Hospital Center is excited to offer the Winter Nurse Externship Program for qualified nursing students. Nurse externs selected for this program will work in the clinical setting with highly qualified preceptors. The program is structured to allow nurse externs to see patients on a continuum of care throughout the hospital experience. Nurse externs are guided by a nurse mentor who oversee the experience in the various clinical settings. Nurse externs will have the flexibility to work 108 hours during the 4-week program in the winter.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED
- Currently enrolled in an Accredited Nursing Program
- Completion of two semesters of clinical experience prior to the start of the externship experience
- Senior status in current nursing program
- Verification of good academic standing in current nursing program
- Attainment of a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or greater on a 4.0 scale (verified by unofficial transcript)
- Expected graduation from approved program within one year of externship

Responsibilities
- Implements direct patient care under the supervision of the nurse, promoting patient and family centered care in a healing environment.
- Administers or assists patients with ADLs, performs vital signs, I&O, fall and pressure ulcer prevention measures, Foley care, phlebotomy, or point of care testing as requested.
- Collects clinical data and information on patients, and reports changes in patient status to the nurse.
- Documents all patient care activities provided.
- Assists nurse with patient and family education.
- Ensures availability of supplies and equipment to meet each patient’s needs.
- Participates in activities that promote safety, quality and regulatory compliance.
- Performs Other Responsibilities as Assigned.
