About The Position

This position involves performing the duties of a professional nurse, including assessing patients' conditions, developing and administering patient care plans, documenting care, and evaluating outcomes. The role also includes welcoming patients, promoting a safe and therapeutic environment, ensuring rounds and precaution records are completed, collaborating with the Resource and Referral Department for admissions and transfers, and providing thorough hand-off communication. The nurse will interact with patients, families, and healthcare providers to gather data for care planning, participate in interdisciplinary planning, and ensure medical problems are incorporated into treatment plans. Additionally, the role involves assisting in the development of nursing department goals, participating in activities to improve department functioning and professional competence, assisting in personnel selection and orientation, and demonstrating objective evaluation of feedback. The nurse will also participate in program evaluation, attend in-service programs, serve as a role model and resource for students, explain policies and procedures, and utilize community interactions to educate about mental health. The position requires supervising direct patient care as needed and working within budgetary constraints, including staffing, overtime, and supply/equipment usage.

Requirements

  • Maintain information as highly confidential
  • Nursing degree
  • Current State of Illinois Registered Nurse license
  • Current CPR Certification issued by either American Heart Association or Red Cross
  • CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) certification within 90 days of hire

Nice To Haves

  • One-year psychiatric experience
  • Basic knowledge of abnormal psychology as typically found in the psychiatric population
  • Familiarity with management of a therapeutic level system and understanding of system of rewards and consequences

Responsibilities

  • Assessing patients' condition

  • Requesting and providing thorough hand off communication upon admission, transfer or discharge and when sending or receiving boarding patients
  • Interacting with the patient, the patient’s family, and the appropriate health care providers to collect and analyze data regarding the patient’s physical, psychosocial, environmental, self-care, educational, and anticipated discharge planning needs
  • Participating in development of interdisciplinary planning process
  • Ensuring that medical problems are incorporated into the treatment plan
  • Assisting in the development and attainment of nursing department goals and objectives
  • Participating in activities to improve department functioning and to enhance own professional competence
  • Assisting in the selection and orientation of qualified personnel to provide optimum patient care
  • Demonstrating the ability to evaluate suggestions and criticisms objectively and wherever necessary undertakes to change behavior or seek further guidance
  • Participating in program evaluation
  • Attending in-service programs and trainings
  • Serving as a role model and central resource person for students
  • Explaining and clarifying organization policies and procedures to staff and patients
  • Utilizing opportunities with community groups to further their knowledge and understanding of mental health problems
  • Supervising direct patient care as required
  • Working within budgetary constraints to include staffing, use of overtime and use of supplies and equipment
