About The Position
The American Medical Association is hiring a Manuscript Editor I for its Scientific Publications team. This hybrid position is based at the AMA’s Chicago office and requires working in the office three days per week. The editor works on JAMA scientific articles written by physicians and researchers, as well as a major journal section intended for a medical readership. The role edits medical content in an XML editing system, ensuring it follows AMA style, editorial policies, and deadlines. It also involves researching terminology and publication details, coordinating with authors and editorial, production, and media relations staff throughout and after publication, resolving questions and inconsistencies, and checking proofs and supporting materials for accuracy and conformity to editorial and author changes. The position is exempt. The stated salary range is $61,800–$82,025, and employees are eligible to participate in an incentive plan. Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree required; preferably in English, journalism, communications, or biological or physical sciences.
- Two or more years of related experience; experience as a manuscript editor for a medical, scientific, or technical publication is preferred.
- High level of concentration and critical attention to detail when editing.
- Ability to organize and prioritize assignments and work under strong pressure to meet fixed deadlines.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills for regular and frequent contact with authors, editors, and production staff.
Nice To Haves
- Background in science, knowledge of medical terminology, and familiarity with the AMA Manual of Style and research methods are recommended.
- Familiarity with computer systems, electronic editing software, and content management systems.
- Experience with eXtyles or XML editing is preferred.
Responsibilities
- Edit medical articles and content using an XML editing system while maintaining conformity to AMA style, editorial policies, and deadlines.
- Collaborate with the manager to improve reporting quality and ensure clarity, readability, technical and scientific accuracy, and content integrity.
- Research and follow style and policy for the correct use of medical terms, units of measure, references, and statistics.
- Advise the director on the progress of manuscripts and alert the manager to problems.
- Liaise with authors, editors, and editorial, production, and media relations staff throughout the publication process and after publication.
- Query and resolve inconsistencies and ambiguities, investigate errors, and process corrections.
- Negotiate approval of edited content and address questions from authors and editorial management; work with the manager to resolve conflicts.
- Confirm that necessary consent forms and permissions, author information, and author contributions and disclosures are present.
- Read proofs word for word to verify conformity to editorial and author changes, making changes as necessary.
- Check citations and the format of figures and tables, figure legends, supplemental content, references, and internal and related-article links.
- Perform other responsibilities as assigned.
