About The Position

The Chickahominy Health District is a 4-county district of health departments covering Hanover, Goochland, New Kent and Charles City. The District serves the citizens of these localities preventing illness, promoting healthy lifestyles, and protecting the environment. As part of VDH, this position is a full-time state position with benefits including health insurance and retirement. This position will be based in the Goochland County Health Department office. Travel may be required to the other District offices based on business needs. A valid state driver’s license is required to operate a state vehicle or a personal vehicle while conducting business on behalf of the agency. Mileage will be reimbursed per the standard mileage rate. This Environmental Health Specialist II position will mainly be working in the District’s Onsite program. The applicant must hold and maintain credentials as a DPOR Conventional Onsite Soil Evaluator (COSE) or DPOR Alternative Onsite Soil Evaluator (AOSE). Additional considerations given to applicants that may hold other relevant DPOR credentials.

Requirements

  • Basic knowledge of biology, epidemiology, chemistry, mathematics, and statistics
  • Ability to interpret complex federal, state and local environmental health policies, regulations, and laws
  • Skill in communication, both oral and written; ability to deal with the public and resolve conflict in a regulatory setting
  • Experience preparing thorough documentation and reports of regulatory activities
  • Skill as an educator/trainer of environmental health principles
  • Ability to interpret and enforce laws and regulations governing environmental health programs
  • Ability to analyze information and make recommendations; to receive, understand and perform tasks as instructed by supervisor; to perform physically demanding tasks
  • Must be DPOR licensed master alternative onsite soil evaluator or master conventional onsite soil evaluator, VDH standardized in food or National Shellfish Sanitation Program State Standardized Inspector to qualify as EHS Senior
  • A valid State Driver's License is required to operate a state vehicle or if operating a personal vehicle while conducting business on behalf of the agency

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with VDH's Environmental Health Database
  • Licensed Professional Soil Scientist (LPSS) or Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) credentials

Responsibilities

  • Onsite soil evaluations
  • Permitting and inspecting onsite sewage disposal systems and private wells
  • Rabies investigations and abatement activities
  • Investigation of general environmental complaints and communicable disease concerns
  • Maintain knowledge and proper implementation of the Commonwealth of Virginia, Board of Health, current policies, environmental health program, sewage handling and disposal regulations, and private well regulations.
  • Communicate effectively with various groups including: General Public, Other Government Personnel, Private Sector Contractors, Engineers, and Colleagues
  • Public outreach events on behalf of Environmental Health
  • Complete documentation of all program activities by use of the Environmental Health Database.
  • Other duties as assigned
