Staff Software Engineer - Backend

About The Position

Deploy is hiring a Staff Software Engineer to help build and improve backend systems for its AI infrastructure platform. The role involves launching products and features into production, working autonomously, adopting new technologies, and addressing challenges of scale. The ideal candidate has built core services and web-based APIs, balances product and technical considerations, and writes clean, maintainable code. The engineer will contribute to REST APIs, microservices, data ingestion and processing systems, and distributed task and job processing systems. They will improve product and backend systems, engineering standards, tooling, processes, and security; debug production issues; and participate in on-call rotations as needed. The position also requires following security and information-protection policies and reporting suspected violations. Deploy has more than 250 employees across offices in San Francisco, Seattle, New York, and Delhi. The company describes itself as a fast-growing AI startup where employees can make a noticeable, direct impact. The expected base salary is $200,000–$300,000; stock options may also be offered. Compensation may vary based on qualifications, skills, competencies, experience, and location.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field.
  • At least 8 years of experience building web applications.
  • Experience successfully implementing highly available distributed systems or microservices.
  • Experience delivering scalable backend APIs.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a bias toward action.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree or PhD in engineering, computer science, or a related technical field.
  • Hands-on technical leadership experience leading project teams and setting technical direction.
  • Experience architecting and developing solutions to ambiguous problems with significant impact.
  • Interest in and ability to learn other coding languages.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, or improve features in backend systems, including REST APIs, microservices, data ingestion and processing systems, and distributed task/job processing systems.
  • Write and maintain scalable, performant, and secure code that can be shared across platforms.
  • Contribute to the product and core backend systems by suggesting and executing improvements.
  • Improve engineering standards, tooling, processes, and security.
  • Practice test-driven development.
  • Debug production issues across services and multiple levels of the stack.
  • Participate in on-call rotations as needed to promptly and effectively resolve critical technical issues.
  • Use OWASP Top 10 techniques to secure code from vulnerabilities.
  • Maintain awareness of industry best practices for data maintenance handling relevant to the role.
  • Adhere to policies, guidelines, and procedures for protecting information assets.
  • Report actual or suspected security and/or policy violations or breaches to an appropriate authority.
