Junior QA Engineer

Tabbed•New York, NY

About The Position

Tabbed is building its quality practice from the ground up, and this role will be the company’s first dedicated QA position. The mobile app is built in React Native and runs on iOS and Android. The role begins with hands-on manual testing across both platforms and will develop into establishing automated UI/UX regression tests and TypeScript/Node.js test fixtures that simulate point-of-sale (POS) terminals, reducing reliance on physical hardware. The position works closely with engineering and product teams and has meaningful influence over testing practices, tools, and quality measures. The successful candidate will create and execute end-to-end manual test plans; turn requirements, designs, and user stories into reusable test cases; track defects and verify fixes; and use Node.js and TypeScript tooling to debug issues and investigate logs and API traffic. They will also perform exploratory testing, establish QA processes, help build mobile UI automation and POS simulators, evaluate testing tools, and gradually integrate automated tests into CI/CD. This is an opportunity for a curious, self-motivated early-career engineer to take ownership, learn from the engineering team, and help define QA standards. The role offers a path toward a senior or lead quality position as the QA function grows, potentially including helping hire and onboard future team members. The position is location-agnostic and may be performed from anywhere in the U.S.A.

Requirements

  • Hands-on programming experience with TypeScript or JavaScript and Node.js, including writing scripts and small services, working with asynchronous code, using npm, and debugging with logs. Coursework, internships, bootcamps, and personal projects count.
  • Working familiarity with React and React Native, including components, props, state, hooks, and how a UI renders.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Understanding of the software development lifecycle and core QA concepts, including test plans, test cases, regression and smoke testing, and the bug lifecycle.
  • Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to problem-solving.
  • Self-motivation and comfort working with ambiguity and determining how to proceed without an existing playbook.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, including confidence raising quality concerns with engineering and product stakeholders.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with React Native tooling such as Expo, Metro, or React Native debugging tools.
  • Experience with mobile UI automation frameworks such as Detox, Maestro, or Appium (WebdriverIO).
  • Experience with JavaScript/TypeScript testing tools such as Jest, Vitest, or React Native Testing Library.
  • Experience testing mobile apps on iOS and Android devices, simulators, and emulators, including Xcode Simulator and Android Studio.
  • Experience with Node.js servers or frameworks such as Express or Fastify, and building or consuming REST APIs, WebSockets, or mock servers.
  • Experience with Git and basic version-control workflows.
  • Familiarity with bug-tracking and test-management tools such as Jira or TestRail.
  • Familiarity with API tools such as Postman.
  • Interest in or exposure to payments, POS systems, or hardware integrations.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD tools such as GitHub Actions, Jenkins, Bitrise, or EAS.

Responsibilities

  • Create and execute formal end-to-end manual test plans on iOS and Android for new features, bug fixes, and release candidates.
  • Write reusable test cases based on product requirements, designs, and user stories, and maintain them in a living test library.
  • Identify, document, and track defects with precise reproduction steps, noting platform-specific or cross-platform behavior, and work with developers to verify fixes.
  • Use Node.js and TypeScript tooling to debug issues, inspect logs and API traffic, and help identify root causes.
  • Perform exploratory testing to find edge cases, device and operating-system differences, and usability issues.
  • Establish baseline QA processes, including bug-reporting standards, release checklists, and test documentation.
  • Begin building automated UI/UX regression tests for the React Native app.
  • Develop TypeScript and Node.js test fixtures and mock services that simulate POS terminal behavior and reduce reliance on physical hardware.
  • Evaluate and recommend testing tools and frameworks, and bring automated tests into the CI/CD pipeline over time.
  • Partner with engineers and product managers during project planning, standups, and release-readiness reviews.

Benefits

  • 100% employer-paid medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Four Blue Cross Blue Shield medical plans to choose from, including an HSA-eligible option.
  • Dental and vision coverage through Guardian.
  • Unlimited PTO.
  • Location-agnostic schedule and work from anywhere in the U.S.A.
