About The Position

The Norfolk Department of Public Health is seeking a Wage Occupational Health (Employee Health) Nurse. The Occupational Health (Employee Health) Nurse provides part-time clinical and occupational health services to employees within the Local Health District. The incumbent is responsible for supporting employee health, safety, and fitness-for-duty through standardized occupational health processes including intake health evaluations, immunization review, TB screening and risk assessment, respirator fit testing coordination, and limited episodic/acute employee care as appropriate within scope of practice. The position functions as the primary clinical resource for employee health and works closely with Human Resources to ensure timely, consistent, and confidential processing of occupational health requirements. The nurse supports workforce readiness by promoting health protection measures, monitoring compliance with required health standards, and assisting in workplace health risk mitigation. The role does not serve as the lead OSHA compliance officer but may support occupational health safety initiatives in coordination with agency safety or compliance staff.

Requirements

  • Licensure as an RN in Virginia or compact state.
  • Strong knowledge of nursing principles and clinical assessment in occupational or employee health settings.
  • Experience with immunization review, vaccine administration protocols, and immunization record management.
  • Knowledge of TB screening protocols, exposure follow-up, and risk assessment.
  • Experience conducting health intake evaluations and fitness-for-duty assessments.
  • Ability to perform or coordinate respirator fit testing (e.g., N95 or equivalent).
  • Knowledge of infection prevention and control principles in workplace settings.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for employee-facing clinical interactions.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of employee health records in compliance with HIPAA and applicable regulations.
  • Proficiency with electronic health records (EHR) and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to work independently in a part-time clinical role with minimal supervision.
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in Virginia required.

Nice To Haves

  • Occupational Health Nursing certification (COHN/COHN-S) preferred but not required.
  • Experience in employee health, occupational health, urgent care, or public health nursing preferred.
  • Experience with TB screening programs, immunization clinics, or workforce health programs preferred.
  • Experience working with Human Resources systems or fitness-for-duty processes preferred.
  • Associate or Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.
