About The Position

The Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Pascal Mubenga, is interested in receiving applications from qualified candidates for the position of MUSIC 5-12 CHORAL DIRECTOR at PS 192 BUFFALO ACADEMY FOR VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS. The position requires a New York State or Buffalo certification in the relevant tenure area and offers the opportunity to engage with the community through performances and advocacy.

Requirements

  • New York State or Buffalo certified in the tenure area for which they are applying to teach.

  • Possess proficient piano accompaniment and choral conducting skills.
  • Knowledge of vocal pedagogy.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with accompanists, faculty, administrators, parents, and community partners.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in after-school and weekend community performances.
  • Perform assigned tasks, fulfill required duties, and carry out additional responsibilities as designated by the building principal.
  • Provide instruction for a diverse population of students, including students with exceptionalities.
  • Direct choral ensembles: Plan, rehearse, and conduct school choirs for concerts, showcases, festivals, competitions, and community events.
  • Teach vocal technique: Instruct students in healthy singing, breath support, diction, tone production, blend, intonation, and expressive performance.
  • Select repertoire: Choose age-appropriate, educationally valuable, diverse, and performance-ready choral music.
  • Prepare students for performances: Coach students in musicianship, stage presence, interpretation, memorization, and ensemble discipline.
  • Assess student progress: Evaluate vocal growth, music literacy, rehearsal participation, performance quality, and artistic development.
  • Lead auditions and placement: Audition students, assign voice parts, form ensembles, and support recruitment for the choral program.
  • Collaborate with arts faculty: Work with theater, dance, instrumental music, and academic staff on productions, interdisciplinary projects, and school events.
  • Coordinate concerts and events: Manage performance logistics, including scheduling, programs, accompanists, venues, attire, equipment, and communication with families.
  • Support musical theater productions: Provide vocal direction, rehearsal leadership, and coaching for school musicals or staged performances.
  • Maintain program administration: Manage budgets, music libraries, attendance, permissions, festival paperwork, communications, and equipment needs.
  • Promote a positive ensemble culture: Build an inclusive, disciplined, respectful, and artistically ambitious learning environment.
  • Engage the community: Represent the school through performances, partnerships, outreach events, and arts advocacy.
  • Ensure student safety and professionalism: Follow school policies, supervise students during rehearsals and performances, and model professional artistic conduct.
