About The Position

Performs skilled mechanical work in the inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of diesel-powered vehicles and heavy equipment to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of fleet equipment. With regular attendance, this position conducts preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs while adhering to safety standards and specifications.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • 3 years of work experience as a heavy-duty truck/equipment mechanic in a full-service diesel shop.
  • Have and maintain a valid Driver’s License with a CDL-B endorsement (or ability to obtain endorsement within 3 months of hire), as well as meet eligibility requirements of “acceptable driving standards” as defined by the County.
  • Must supply and maintain own tools.
  • Minimum of: ¼” to ½” Ratchets ¼” to ½” Sockets Wrenches <1 ½” Toolbox
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a forklift certification through the National Safety Council within 6 months of employment.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills for interacting with diverse individuals.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and manage time effectively.
  • Proficiency in using the Microsoft Office Suite and other software related to data management, communication, and other common business processes.
  • Ability to follow established policies and procedures for confidentiality while adapting to evolving privacy standards and technologies.
  • Ability to build and maintain positive relationships within a team.
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques used in the maintenance and repair of diesel engines and heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to maintenance and repair activities.
  • Skill in diagnosing mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues in diesel-powered vehicles and equipment.
  • Skill in performing preventative maintenance, inspections, and complex mechanical repairs.
  • Skill in troubleshooting equipment malfunctions and determining appropriate repair methods.
  • Skill in using diagnostic tools, testing equipment, hand tools, and shop machinery required for repairs.
  • Ability to perform heavy mechanical work and operate shop equipment safely.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and diagnostic reports.

Responsibilities

  • Perform repairs and maintenance on heavy trucks and equipment to minimize vehicle downtime and to provide for safe operation.
  • Complete preventative maintenance schedules for all vehicles and mechanical equipment.
  • Overhaul vehicle systems (e.g., hydraulics, climate control, axles, transmission, etc.).
  • Make recommendations on outsourcing repairs based on cost and time efficiency.
  • Provide emergency field assistance to disabled equipment as needed.
  • Review work orders and refer to related repair manuals for references as necessary; process work orders per departmental guidelines.
  • Install radio equipment and specialty lights in heavy trucks and equipment.
  • Test repairs to ensure proper operation before vehicle is released.
  • Perform minor body repair, touch up, and related work.
  • Perform fabrication and welding duties as needed.
  • Clean, pressure wash, and/or sandblast equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
