About The Position

Requirements

• Five years of increasingly responsible code enforcement or related experience.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
• Ability to obtain CCIC/NCIC Certification within 6 months of hire.
• Ability to obtain CCEO certification within 12 months of hire.
• Ability to obtain Stormwater Inspector certification within 12 months of hire.
• Ability to build cooperative working relationships, communicate effectively, and maintain professionalism.
• Ability to independently manage complex or sensitive situations.
• Understanding of zoning, subdivision, grading, drainage, nuisance codes, and related federal and state regulations.
• Knowledge of legal procedures and construction practices.
• Ability to interpret plans, conduct inspections, analyze technical data, and recommend solutions.
• Strong problem-solving, interpersonal communication, and conflict-resolution skills.
• Ability to prepare clear reports, maintain detailed records, and operate office and field equipment.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and respond calmly to public concerns.
• Physical ability to sit at a computer, walk or stand, communicate by telephone and in person, operate office equipment, reach, stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, push and pull, and lift or carry objects up to 50 pounds.

Responsibilities

• Work with residents and property owners to achieve voluntary compliance and maintain community standards.
• Investigate complaints involving zoning, subdivision, drainage, grading, nuisance, and other code violations, and follow cases through resolution.
• Communicate with complainants and violators, provide guidance and case updates, and issue warnings, violation notices, and summonses.
• Assist legal staff and testify in court when needed.
• Maintain case files, logs, monthly reports, inspection documentation, and other records using City systems.
• Conduct sweeps of commercial areas, identify trends, and recommend code revisions when appropriate.
• Assist Police and other City staff with code enforcement inquiries.
• Inspect private developments and construction sites for compliance with approved plans and grading, erosion, sediment-control, and stormwater requirements.
• Deliver pre-construction briefings on best management practices and support stormwater compliance documentation and corrective actions.
• Remove signs, pick up debris, operate field equipment, and navigate varied site conditions.
• Prepare letters, emails, notices, reports, and related correspondence.
• Use independent judgment to determine enforcement actions in complex or politically sensitive cases.
• Coordinate with Public Works, Engineering, and external partners on stormwater, grading, and drainage issues.
• Address homeless encampment issues while supporting civil rights obligations and community needs, and provide resources and assistance to vulnerable community members.
• Provide field instruction, mentoring, and policy guidance to junior officers and staff, and assist the program manager with work delegation.
• Assist with site surveys and measurements, attend professional meetings, and perform other duties as assigned.
