About The Position

Requirements

• Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine from an appropriately approved or accredited institution.
• Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
• Completion of residency training meeting VA requirements in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification, or an applicable alternative training and practice pathway described in the announcement.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.
• BLS/ACLS required.
• U.S. citizenship, except where VA policy permits appointment of non-citizens when qualified citizens cannot be recruited.
• Ability to meet applicable pre-employment requirements, including background/security investigation, drug screening for testing-designated positions, and pre-employment physical evaluation.
• Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program.
• Meet EDRP eligibility requirements and submit an application within four months of appointment to be considered for EDRP.

Responsibilities

• Assess, consult on, and prepare patients for anesthesia, including conducting preoperative examinations and assessments.
• Provide anesthesia for surgical, therapeutic, and diagnostic procedures and manage patients before, during, and after procedures.
• Perform standard general anesthesia, neuraxial anesthesia, minor and major nerve blocks, and monitored anesthesia care.
• Provide anesthesia-related direct patient care in operating room, PACU, ICU, ward, and clinic settings as needed.
• Monitor and restore homeostasis during the perioperative period and manage homeostasis in critically ill, injured, or seriously ill patients.
• Diagnose and treat painful syndromes.
• Manage cardiac and pulmonary resuscitation.
• Evaluate respiratory function and apply respiratory therapy modalities, including interpretation of pulmonary function testing.
• Perform other perioperative medicine care according to published anesthesiology standards.
• Perform and supervise invasive monitoring, central line placement, hemodynamic control, and vasoactive medication infusions.
• Supervise, teach, and evaluate medical and paramedical personnel in anesthesia.
• Supervise patients in the post-anesthesia care unit and critically ill patients in special care units.
• Participate in research and collaborative research efforts as required, including identifying evidence and practice gaps and measuring the impact of improvement efforts.
• Undertake administrative involvement in hospitals, medical schools, and outpatient facilities as needed to implement responsibilities.
• Provide on-call coverage.
• Monitor the quality, safety, and appropriateness of patient care at the section and facility levels.
• Complete Surgical Service projects assigned by the Chief of Anesthesia or Chief of Surgery.
• Attend Surgical and Anesthesia team meetings and participate in CME and VA continuing education activities.
• Act in accordance with Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules, and Regulations.
