About The Position

Requirements

• Associate degree or Diploma in Nursing.
• Current State of Illinois Registered Professional Nurse licensure.
• OR: BLS; ACLS is required only if performing conscious sedation.
• Pre/post: BLS, ACLS, and PALS within six months of hire.
• Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Nice To Haves

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Experience with electronic medical records (EMR).
• Advanced computer skills.
• Familiarity with medical terminology and basic surgical procedures.
• Effective time management and ability to work independently.
• Ability to organize and prioritize, and to solve problems.
• Strong critical-thinking skills and decisive judgment.
• Prior Epic experience.
• Triage, critical care, emergency department, or surgical patient experience.

Responsibilities

• Interview surgical patients in person and by phone, coordinate their care, and clear charts for surgery.
• Develop patient care plans in preparation for surgery using the nursing process: assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
• Perform patient care in a manner that optimizes safety, reduces the likelihood of medical or health care errors, and incorporates National Patient Safety Goals.
• Work collaboratively with Anesthesia to clear patients for surgery.
• Communicate and interact effectively with patients, families, physicians, ancillary support services, office staff, and nursing units.
• Follow up persistently and solve problems effectively in a tactful, non-confrontational manner.
• Use quality-improvement results to initiate changes in nursing practice and the health care delivery system.
• Review pre-operative instructions for patients scheduled for the next day and obtain necessary documentation and supplies.
• Provide patient comfort and safety using appropriate equipment and/or medication.
• Maintain records and log books as required by policy and regulation.
• Assign pre-operative arrival times and notify patients at least one day before surgery.
• Check pre-operative charts for completion and obtain paperwork needed to complete them.
