About The Position

The Terminal Operator performs a variety of general labor and equipment operation duties to support the safe and efficient operation of an oil tank farm and bulk handling facility. Working as part of a team, this position is responsible for maintaining safe work practices while supporting daily terminal operations. Duties may include a wide range of operational tasks, some of which require specialized skills, licenses, or certifications. This position requires the flexibility to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed to support 24-hour, year-round operations. Work is performed primarily outdoors in a maritime environment, with occasional travel to other company terminals as business needs require. Training is provided, and employees may have opportunities for career growth and advancement based on performance, qualifications, and business needs.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in industrial operations, construction, manufacturing, warehousing, maritime operations, or general labor preferred.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Ability to successfully pass a background check and obtain and maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
  • Basic computer proficiency.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Stand and walk for extended periods, up to 75% of the workday.
  • Lift up to 75 pounds and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Pull or handle loads up to 75 pounds, including mooring lines and equipment.
  • Frequently climb stairs, ladders, ramps, and tanks.
  • Work outdoors year-round in varying weather conditions and around moving equipment, marine vessels, and industrial machinery.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including respiratory protection when required.
  • Work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, and emergency call-ins as operational needs require.
  • Maintain a constant state of alertness and situational awareness.

Responsibilities

  • Safely operate mobile equipment (including skid steers, pay-loaders, forklifts, hoppers, and similar equipment) to support terminal operations.
  • Participate in the safe transfer of petroleum and bulk products between vessels, storage tanks, trucks, railcars, and terminal systems.
  • Monitor terminal operations and promptly report equipment malfunctions, unsafe conditions, or environmental concerns.
  • Assist with vessel mooring and unmooring operations.
  • Operate guard shack and truck scales to accurately record inbound and outbound vehicle information.
  • Operate vessel crane(s) as trained and qualified.
  • Obtain and maintain required certifications, including Rigging, Signalperson, and Heavy Lift, as applicable.
  • Perform routine operational, safety, and security inspections throughout the terminal.
  • Maintain accurate operational logs, inspection records, and other required documentation.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and assist with the maintenance of terminal equipment, buildings, and grounds.
  • Perform pump, motor, piping, and valve repairs and heavy equipment and vehicle maintenance.
  • Perform welding and fabrication work, as qualified and required.
  • Provide professional customer service to drivers, contractors, vendors, and customers.
  • Occasionally travel to other Sprague facilities to support operational needs.
  • Comply with all company safety, environmental, and security policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Complete required training and maintain all applicable qualifications and certifications.
  • Participate in emergency response activities and drills as required.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives that enhance safety, reliability, and operational efficiency.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
