About The Position

Requirements

• North Carolina BLET certification required prior to applying for Deputy Sheriff position.
• High School Diploma, or G.E.D. equivalence.
• Valid driver’s license and clean driving history.
• Ability to pass a drug screening and complete medical examination by a licensed physician, including psychological testing and evaluation.
• 20 years of age prior to hire date.
• U.S. citizen or Naturalization Certification, if applicable.
• Ability to pass agency physical fitness and reading comprehension test.
• Clean criminal record to include no felony convictions.
• No DWI conviction within the past five years and no more than two in a lifetime.
• Honorable Military Discharge, if applicable.
• Reside within 50 miles radius of the Sheriff’s Office Detention Center – Central.
• Pass the firearm qualification with a score of 80% or better.

Nice To Haves

• Proficiency speaking, reading, and writing in a foreign language other than English (for bilingual incentive pay).

Responsibilities

• Enforcing the statutes of North Carolina, and all local and federal laws.
• Following the rules and regulations set forth by the Sheriff of Mecklenburg County.
• Maintaining a dual role as a sworn Law Enforcement Officer and certified Detention Officer.
• Completing mandated 6-week training including classroom instructions and daily physical activities.
• Being assigned to the Arrest Processing Center or the Courts Division.
• Potentially being assigned anywhere in the organization based on legitimate business needs.
