About The Position

Rivers Health is seeking a per-diem RPGST-Registered Polysomnographer. The Technologist works under the supervision of the Sleep Disorders Clinical Coordinator and has earned certification as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT). This role involves providing care and direct service to patients, working in close proximity to them, and interacting on a regular basis with patients across different age groups (Young Adult: 18-45 yrs., Middle-aged Adult: 45-65 yrs., Late Adulthood: Over 65 yrs.).

Requirements

  • Certification as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT).
  • Active Basic Life Support (BCLS) Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Collects, analyzes, and integrates patient information to identify and meet patient-specific needs, and to determine final testing parameters/procedures in conjunction with the ordering physician or facility director and laboratory protocols.
  • Explains pre-testing, testing, and post-testing procedures to patients.
  • Prepares and calibrates equipment required for testing to determine proper functioning and makes adjustments if necessary.
  • Applies electrodes and sensors according to published standards.
  • Performs appropriate physiologic calibrations to ensure proper signals and makes adjustments, if necessary.
  • Performs routine positive airway procedure (PAP) mask fitting.
  • Follows procedural protocols such as Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), parasomnia studies, PAP and oxygen titration, etc., to ensure collection of proper data.
  • Follows “lights out” procedures to establish and document baseline values (such as body position, oxyhemoglobin saturation, respiratory and heart rates, etc.).
  • Performs Polysomnographic data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free and makes adjustments, if necessary.
  • Performs HSAT both with and without effort monitoring.
  • Documents routine observations, including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and other significant events to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results.
  • Implements appropriate interventions (including actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic interventions such as continuous and bi-level positive airway pressure, oxygen administration, etc.).
  • Follows “lights on” procedures to verify integrity of collected data and completes the data collection process (repeats instrument calibrations and instructs the patient on completing questionnaires, etc.).
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide age-specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of all age patients.
  • Oversees and performs difficult and unusual procedures and therapeutic interventions.
  • Scores sleep/wake stages by applying professionally accepted guidelines.
  • Generates accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical events.
  • Performs routine and complex equipment care and maintenance.
  • Evaluates sleep study related equipment inventory.
  • Responds to study participant’s procedural-related inquiries by providing appropriate information.
  • Complies with BRPT Standards of Conduct.
  • Responds appropriately and immediately in emergency situations.
  • Maintains a safe and healthy environment for patients, visitors, and/or staff to provide the highest level of physical comfort, and minimize risk and injury.
  • Ensures compliance with regulations to maintain accreditation and licensure.
  • Complies with the Cabell Huntington Hospital attendance and tardiness policy.
  • Completes all CHH and department-specific requirements in the prior calendar year.
