About The Position

Requirements

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
• Current Registered Nurse licensure in the state of employment.
• Must conform to the security standards of the institution.
• Hands-On CPR certification.
• Ability to pass required health and other screening tests.
• Ability to meet the physical demands of the role, including frequent lifting or moving of up to 50 pounds.
• Maintain competency and knowledge of current standards of practice, trends, and developments relevant to the role.

Responsibilities

• Assess inmate-patients in settings including intake, sick call, emergencies in housing, chronic care clinics, and the medical unit.
• Identify patient needs, plan nursing care, make timely referrals, initiate care in accordance with institutional policies, and document plans.
• Implement nursing care and medical orders safely and cost-effectively, and document care according to institutional procedures.
• Provide patient education and evaluate and document patient responses to healthcare, making referrals to the healthcare team as appropriate.
• Communicate assessment information and other relevant information accurately, clearly, and promptly, while protecting confidentiality.
• When serving as team leader or charge nurse, delegate duties according to team members’ skills, knowledge, and experience, and guide care provided by others.
• Participate in healthcare team problem-solving and unit meetings, and use appropriate channels to initiate change.
• Promote a safe healthcare environment; maintain the clinical area in a clean, neat, and safe manner; and participate in required counts and cleaning assignments.
• Follow infection-control policies, safe correctional nursing practices, institutional security directives, environmental safety procedures, and medication and controlled-substance requirements.
• Participate in fire and disaster programs and drills as appropriate.
• Maintain professional competency and skills through in-services and continuing education, and participate in education for inmates, security officers, and healthcare team members.
• Support organizational and healthcare-unit changes, accept assignments and extra duties flexibly, and comply with personnel policies, dress code, attendance, punctuality, and timekeeping expectations.
• Complete required orientation and ongoing quality improvement activities; follow facility and OSHA safety rules and occurrence protocols; uphold HIPAA and PREA requirements; and maintain facility security clearance.
