About The Position

Requirements

• At least one year of experience operating small or medium equipment and vehicles.
• Valid Class E driver's license at time of hire, with an acceptable driving record under the Department’s policy.
• Obtain a Class B CDL instructional permit within 60 days of appointment and a Class B CDL with air brakes within 10 months of appointment.
• Meet the qualifications outlined in Title 49 CFR Part 391.11.
• Knowledge of mathematical calculations and standard safety rules and procedures.
• Skill in operating hand and power tools and operating and performing minor maintenance on small and medium equipment and vehicles.
• Ability to operate a variety of heavy equipment.
• Ability to read and understand job-related materials and complete reports and forms.
• Ability to maintain and repair highways, bridges, and other highway structures.
• Ability to communicate verbally and in writing and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.
• Ability to lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl, or bend frequently.
• Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, on varied terrain and at various heights, or in high-volume traffic.
• Ability to work independently and stand for extended periods.
• Obtain Intermediate Level Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) certification within one year and maintain it.
• Be readily available while on duty to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle consistent with the required CDL or routinely perform other CMV safety-sensitive functions.
• Work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.

Responsibilities

• Perform minor maintenance and servicing of equipment, including checking and adding fluids, checking and adjusting brakes, maintaining proper tire pressure, and cleaning and washing equipment.
• Assist with repairs of equipment.
• After obtaining the required instructional CDL permit or license, operate vehicles and small or medium equipment, including dump trucks, front-end loaders, skid-steer loaders, graders, lift equipment, small bulldozers, and asphalt repair trucks, for bridge and roadway maintenance.
• Oversee crews performing maintenance activities.
• Use hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways.
• Perform manual labor incidental to job assignments with minimal supervision.
• Perform tree trimming, rough carpentry, masonry, and painting, and assist with assembling and erecting highway signs.
• Perform Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
• Assist with crew activity reports as needed.
• Respond to emergencies and be available for on-call 24-hour duty when necessary.
