Requirements

Responsibilities

• Collect, analyze, and evaluate evidence using standardized, industry-acceptable techniques.
• Prepare written reports and provide results to law enforcement agencies, pathologists, and attorneys.
• Testify to reported results in court proceedings.
• Stay current with technological advancements and trends in forensic science.
• Complete supply and reagent quotes, maintain sufficient inventory, and manage allocated laboratory resources.
• Provide educational instruction on laboratory procedures.
• Conduct validation studies and implement procedures incorporating validation results approved by the Technical Leader and Laboratory Director.
• Provide technical assistance to law enforcement agencies on appropriate testing courses of action.
• Develop, modify, and maintain training manuals, quality documents, section-specific documents, controlled forms, and laboratory procedures, with supervisor approval.
• Perform technical reviews and verifications of casework.
• Serve as the lead scientific technical advisor for laboratory section operations and as a discipline subject matter expert.
• Evaluate and document approval of validations, performance verifications, and laboratory methods, and propose new or modified analytical procedures.
• Evaluate requests for procedural deviations and determine whether they are technically justified before approval.
• Perform routine preventative maintenance and quality control procedures; initiate equipment and instrumentation service calls; and ensure completion of maintenance, calibration, repair, reagent preparation, and QC logs.
• Approve critical items affecting testing quality and verify that received items are appropriate and suitable for use.
• Update section protocols.
• Generate laboratory statistics and monthly billing summaries for the Business Office, as needed.
• Assist the Laboratory Director with responses to internal and external audit nonconformances.
• Work with the Laboratory Director to meet laboratory accreditation requirements.
• Maintain section waste handling and required documentation.
• Perform other related duties involved in Medical Examiner’s Office operations as assigned or required.
