About The Position

The Medical Examiner Assistant I assists the Medical Examiner with forensic autopsies and autopsy services. The role also responds to scenes and medical facilities, handles and documents human remains and specimens, operates autopsy and mortuary equipment, and maintains the cleanliness of the autopsy suite and instruments. This position is for the overnight shift.

Requirements

Associate's degree or technical-school certification in a science or medical field.
Valid motor vehicle license at the class level specific to the assignment.
Ability to pass a full background check, including a driving history inquiry.
Clean driving history; employees must maintain a clean driving history.
Ability to lift and move human remains up to 250 pounds with assistance and up to 70 pounds independently.
Standard immunizations.
Must undergo a medical evaluation and pass the evaluation/test to be fit tested to wear a respirator.

Responsibilities

Assist the Medical Examiner in all aspects of the forensic autopsy.
Follow specific Standard Operating Procedures and become proficient in skills associated with autopsy and autopsy services.
Assist with the preparation and evisceration of bodies.
Assist in collecting tissue, fluid, and toxicology samples.
Handle and label specimens appropriately and accurately enter specimen and evidentiary information into computer systems.
Operate autopsy and mortuary-related equipment.
Clean and disinfect the autopsy suite and surgical instruments daily.
Dispatch to and respond to scenes and medical facilities.
Move, lift, prepare, position, photograph, and store remains at scenes and medical examiner facilities.
Interact with private and public entities.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Operate OCME vehicles in compliance with Massachusetts driving statutes and regulations and maintain a clean driving history.
