CNC Machinist & Programmer

Blue Origin•Space Coast, FL
•Onsite

About The Position

This hands-on role supports emergent fabrication and machining for Lunar Operations within Blue Origin Operations. The CNC Machinist & Programmer takes hardware from engineering intent to finished and inspected parts by reviewing models and drawings, developing machining strategies, creating CAM programs, setting up and operating CNC equipment, performing manual machining when needed, and carrying out final inspection. The position works in a fast-paced development environment where processes are being built and documentation, flexibility, and ownership are important to delivering flight-relevant hardware. The schedule is 1st shift, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Blue Origin’s Space Coast, Florida location. Relocation is available.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED plus relevant technical training, or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • At least 5 years of combined CNC machining and programming experience producing tight-tolerance hardware.
  • Ability to set up and run mid-to-high complexity jobs, including datum strategy, work offsets, tool length offsets, and safe prove-out practices.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications, including working-level knowledge of GD&T per ASME Y14.5.
  • Working knowledge of CNC programming concepts and ability to edit and verify G-code as needed.
  • Experience holding tolerances to ±0.001 inch or tighter where required, and selecting appropriate inspection methods to verify conformance.
  • Proficiency with shop math, including trigonometry, and basic computer skills such as Windows and common documentation tools.
  • Ability to troubleshoot process issues and communicate clearly with cross-functional teams in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work safely in an industrial and manufacturing environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with HAAS mills and lathes, including safe prove-out, tool management, and probing best practices.
  • Proficiency with Siemens NX CAM, including multi-axis programming, simulation and verification, and disciplined programming workflow.
  • Demonstrated success machining difficult materials such as titanium, Inconel, Monel, and stainless steels, including tool selection, surface-integrity awareness, and tool-life management.
  • Experience with 5-axis simultaneous machining and complex multi-operation workholding, such as soft jaws, vises, tombstones, and custom fixtures.
  • Familiarity with machining simulation tools such as Vericut or equivalent, as well as probing and on-machine measurement.
  • Experience supporting development programs with rapidly evolving requirements and helping define best-known methods.
  • Exposure to related processes such as heat treat, EDM, grinding, welding, coatings, and plating, and understanding of how they influence machining strategy and inspection.
  • Trade school certification, an A.S. degree in machining or manufacturing technology, or equivalent advanced training.

Responsibilities

  • Program, set up, and operate 3-axis and 5-axis CNC mills, CNC lathes, and turning centers to produce parts that meet engineering requirements.
  • Create and prove out Siemens NX CAM programs, including tool selection, workholding approach, and cutting parameters, targeting HAAS equipment when applicable.
  • Manage job execution from planning through inspection, including setups, setup sheets, tool lists, safe prove-out, offsets and compensation adjustments, and repeatability documentation.
  • Execute first-article and development builds, optimizing feeds, speeds, toolpaths, workholding, and sequencing to improve cycle time, surface finish, and dimensional capability.
  • Machine and finish components made from materials such as aluminum, stainless steels, Inconel, and Monel, using disciplined tool-life and heat management.
  • Perform in-process and final inspection using precision measurement tools; record results and support CMM and Metrology as required.
  • Troubleshoot machining and process issues, including chatter, tool wear or breakage, workholding distortion, dimensional drift, and surface damage, and implement corrective actions.
  • Maintain a safe, organized shop environment and follow safety and quality procedures for flight- and mission-critical hardware.
  • Perform manual machining and benchwork, including drilling and tapping, reaming, deburring, blending, and fit-up, when CNC is not the best solution.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Quality, and Operations to clarify requirements, resolve discrepancies, and provide feedback on machinability and inspection approaches while maintaining schedule.
  • Help build shop capability by standardizing tooling, programming templates, probing strategies, and documentation; support preventive maintenance and basic machine health checks.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Basic and supplemental life insurance.
  • Paid parental leave.
  • Short- and long-term disability.
  • 401(k) with company match of up to 5%.
  • Education Support Program.
  • Stock options for regular employees working at least 20 hours per week.
  • Paid time off of up to four weeks per year based on weekly scheduled hours.
  • Up to 14 company-paid holidays.
  • Depending on role type and job level, employees may be eligible for benefits and bonuses based on individual contributions and company results; amounts and eligibility are not guaranteed.
