CNC Machinist & Programmer

BLUE ORIGIN•West Melbourne, FL
•Onsite

About The Position

As part of Blue Origin Operations, this hands-on role supports emergent fabrication and machining for Lunar Operations. The CNC Machinist & Programmer takes hardware from engineering intent to finished, inspected parts by reviewing models and drawings, developing machining strategies, creating CAM programs, setting up and operating CNC mills and turning centers, performing manual machining as needed, and completing final inspections. The role is in a fast-paced development environment where processes are being built and documentation, flexibility, and ownership are important to delivering flight-relevant hardware. The position is based in Space Coast, Florida, works first shift Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and offers relocation assistance. Applicants must meet the stated U.S. citizenship, nationality, permanent-resident, refugee, or asylum status requirement. Background checks apply as specified for the role and job profile.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED plus relevant technical training, or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • At least 5 years of combined CNC machining and programming experience producing tight-tolerance hardware.
  • Ability to set up and run mid-to-high complexity jobs, including datum strategy, work offsets, tool length offsets, and safe prove-out practices.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications, including working-level knowledge of GD&T per ASME Y14.5.
  • Working knowledge of CNC programming concepts and ability to edit and verify G-code as needed.
  • Experience holding tolerances to ±0.001 inch or tighter where required and selecting appropriate inspection methods to verify conformance.
  • Proficiency in shop math, including trigonometry, and basic computer skills, including Windows and common documentation tools.
  • Ability to troubleshoot process issues and communicate clearly with cross-functional teams in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work safely in an industrial and manufacturing environment.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident, or lawfully admitted to the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
  • Required to pass Blue’s Standard Background Check; additional checks or credentials may apply to certain job profiles.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with HAAS mills and lathes, including safe prove-out, tool management, and probing practices.
  • Proficiency with Siemens NX CAM, including multi-axis programming, simulation and verification, and disciplined programming workflow.
  • Experience machining difficult materials such as titanium, Inconel, Monel, and stainless steels, including tool selection, surface-integrity awareness, and tool-life management.
  • Experience with 5-axis simultaneous machining and complex multi-operation workholding, such as soft jaws, vises, tombstones, and custom fixtures.
  • Familiarity with machining simulation tools such as Vericut or equivalent, as well as probing and on-machine measurement.
  • Experience supporting development programs with evolving requirements and helping define best-known methods.
  • Exposure to heat treat, EDM, grinding, welding, coatings, and plating and their effects on machining strategy and inspection.
  • Trade school certification, an associate degree in machining or manufacturing technology, or equivalent advanced training.

Responsibilities

  • Program, set up, and operate 3-axis and 5-axis CNC mills, CNC lathes, and turning centers to produce precision parts to engineering requirements.
  • Create and prove out Siemens NX CAM programs, including tool selection, workholding, and cutting parameters, targeting HAAS equipment when applicable.
  • Execute jobs from planning through inspection, including setups, setup sheets, tool lists, safe prove-out, offsets and compensation adjustments, and repeatability documentation.
  • Perform first-article and development builds, optimizing feeds, speeds, toolpaths, workholding, and sequencing to improve cycle time, surface finish, and dimensional capability.
  • Machine and finish aluminum, stainless steels, Inconel, and Monel components using disciplined tool-life and heat management.
  • Perform in-process and final inspections using precision measurement tools, record results, and support CMM and Metrology as required.
  • Troubleshoot machining and process issues, including chatter, tool wear or breakage, workholding distortion, dimensional drift, and surface damage, and implement corrective actions.
  • Maintain a safe, organized shop and follow safety and quality procedures for flight- and mission-critical hardware.
  • Perform manual machining and benchwork, including drilling, tapping, reaming, deburring, blending, and fit-up, when CNC is not the best solution.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Quality, and Operations to clarify requirements, resolve discrepancies, provide feedback on machinability and inspection approaches, and maintain schedule.
  • Help build shop capability by standardizing tooling, programming templates, probing strategies, and documentation, and support preventive maintenance and basic machine health checks.
