About The Position
The Histotechnician I contributes to the diagnosis, treatment, and care of patients by accurately processing surgical pathology specimens. Duties may include processing, embedding, and microtomy of surgical tissues; cryotomy and frozen-section staining; routine H&E and special staining; high-complexity testing such as immunohistochemistry; gross examination and tissue processing of surgical biopsies; equipment maintenance and record retention; staff training; and use of the pathology Laboratory Information System. The role may also involve high-volume automated immunohistochemical (IHC) staining and travel between the Scottsdale and Phoenix campuses. The position requires excellent troubleshooting skills and knowledge of life-span growth and development, as well as the ability to assess data reflecting patients’ status and age-specific needs. The employee may handle chemicals and/or reagents, including hazardous chemical waste materials. Visa sponsorship or transfer is not available, and Mayo Clinic does not participate in the F-1 STEM OPT extension program. Requirements
- Associate of Science degree from an accredited college or university in histology or biology, or with emphasis in anatomical, biological, and chemical science; or meet CLIA-88 regulations (42 CFR 493.1487 through 493.1491) for high-complexity testing and have one year of histology experience; or successfully complete a NAACLS-accredited Histology Program.
- HT (ASCP) certification, or ability to obtain it within 18 months of hire.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent troubleshooting skills.
- Knowledge of the principles of growth and development across the life span.
- Ability to demonstrate good judgment when dealing with procedural and technical issues.
Nice To Haves
- Two years of experience as a certified HT (ASCP).
Responsibilities
