About The Position

Requirements

• Proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Ability to meet the applicable education or experience and knowledge, skills, and abilities requirements for the selected GS grade (GS-04 through GS-07).
• Knowledge of basic and standard medical terminology, including the ability to interpret physician orders or instructions.
• Ability to recognize patient needs and signs of distress, position patients appropriately, and learn or recognize normal and abnormal procedure results.
• Ability to operate diagnostic equipment and perform standard equipment maintenance, including disassembling, cleaning, reassembling, and calibrating machines.
• Ability to monitor patients for adverse reactions and take appropriate action; higher-grade criteria include recognizing and reporting potentially lethal arrhythmias.
• Ability to read, write, and organize written material.
• Meet the position's physical requirements, including near and far vision, color vision, bilateral dexterity, reaching, bending, twisting, stooping, squatting, lifting, pushing, pulling, and unencumbered ambulation.
• U.S. citizenship is required, subject to the stated VA policy exception for non-citizens when qualified citizens cannot be recruited.
• Selected applicants must pass required pre-employment screening, including a physical evaluation, background/security investigation, and drug testing where applicable; seasonal influenza vaccination is required for VA health care personnel.
• Must complete the online onboarding process and required application documentation; males born after December 31, 1959, must meet Selective Service registration requirements.
• Must serve a one- or two-year trial period, subject to written certification for continued employment.

Nice To Haves

• One to two years of experience as a monitor technician.
• Experience watching cardiac monitors.
• Telemetry services and telemetry cardiac-monitoring experience are highly desirable.
• Licensure or certification is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above.

Responsibilities

• Operate and monitor electrocardiographic equipment for continuous telemetry rhythm evaluation and interpretation.
• Monitor and interpret cardiac rhythms, identify lethal arrhythmias, and immediately notify the RN, Charge RN, or emergency response team when urgent assessment is needed.
• Observe patients on monitors, analyze ECG strips, document findings, and immediately report unusual findings to the RN.
• Perform 12-lead EKGs and apply or remove remote telemetry.
• Use basic pharmacology knowledge to account for medication effects on cardiac rhythm and customize alarm parameters and monitoring functions.
• Store, clean, and maintain equipment; perform standard operator maintenance and track equipment repair histories.
• Input patient data into the telemetry monitoring system and ensure patients are assigned to the correct bed and monitoring equipment.
• Document rhythm interpretations every eight hours and whenever a rhythm changes; provide centralized monitoring, print and interpret telemetry rhythm strips, and inform nursing staff of rhythm changes.
• When assigned under RN direction, obtain vital signs, help maintain a safe care environment, provide sitter companionship as needed, and perform other assigned duties.
• Assist with communication in the acute care setting by answering and appropriately directing calls.
• Report patient-care issues, abnormal rates, and cardiac rhythms to the manager or designee each shift.
• Stock and inventory telemetry supplies and maintain equipment at the station.
• Follow medical center safety and infection-control procedures and participate in quality-assurance activities as directed.
• Work with the acute care team, follow work assignments, and take direction from the RN regarding patient care.
