About The Position

Reporting to the Senior Director of Study Abroad & International Programs, the Associate Director in the Office of Study Abroad and International Programs (SAIP Office) will provide office-wide services and functions in support of study abroad and international programs, including student advising and outreach, pre-departure orientation, student records management, and financial services. The Associate Director will also move forward projects to enhance Pitzer’s direct-run study abroad programs, which offer immersive, cohort-based experiences that integrate language instruction, family stays, an interdisciplinary course focused on the program location, and the opportunity to pursue an independent study and/or community-based learning project. Pitzer College currently operates four semester programs and three summer programs. The Associate Director is expected to have knowledge in best practices for inclusive and student-centered study abroad advising, as well as experience with marketing, outreach, and promotion of programs or services to a student audience. The position requires excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills, as well as prior experience studying, living, or working abroad. This is a part-time, temporary position with an expected duration of 2-3 months (renewable, depending on needs) to cover while two SAIP staff are on leave.

  • Must have access to a personal laptop that is reliable and secure.
  • Master’s Degree or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired.
  • Three to five years of professional work experience in education abroad, with significant advising responsibilities, at a four-year college or university or with a study abroad program provider.
  • Experience working with university staff, students, and faculty, as well as prior experience studying, living, or working abroad, is also required.
  • Proven experience with marketing, outreach, and promotion of programs or services to a student audience.

Nice To Haves

  • Five or more years of experience in the international education field
  • At least two years’ experience in communications, event planning, public relations, or marketing, preferably in a higher education or non-profit organization setting.
  • Experience with student recruitment efforts and with creating, implementing, and evaluating marketing and communications plans is also desirable.
  • Background in graphic design and web content management tools is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Implement strategic marketing, communications, and outreach plans for the SAIP Office, in close collaboration with the office’s leadership team.
  • Ensure communications strategy meets information needs of campus stakeholders, including faculty, staff, students, families, trustees, and donors, among others.
  • Implement and manage marketing strategies through the use of the office website, online and print advertising, social media, email, and other activities.
  • Manage the office’s on-campus communications strategy to include regular messages to students, the weekly newsletter, and other campaigns.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Pitzer Programs to develop marketing strategies and plans, including the creation of materials, for Pitzer-run Programs.
  • Define and pursue outreach strategies to increase student access to study abroad opportunities.
  • Liaise with SAIP and Communications staff to highlight students, Pitzer Programs, and other SAIP activities in various media, including but not limited to: on-campus publications, online publications, blogs, videos, websites.
  • Manage social media and other programming to increase visibility and student engagement in study abroad and international programs.
  • Coordinate the work done by Study Abroad Fellows (student workers) related to outreach efforts and social media.
  • Create, edit, and/or update general pre-departure and other resource materials for outbound and returning study abroad students.
  • Create print and web-based informational materials that carry a consistent voice and message.
  • Design and maintain dynamic print and electronic marketing and informational materials.
  • Follow the college’s style guidelines and best practices.
  • Facilitate study abroad information sessions.
  • Coordinate and conduct presentations at various campus events, including new student orientation, first-year seminars, etc.
  • Lead the SAIP Correspondents Program, including collecting, curating, and posting student-produced digital content
  • Meet one-on-one with students interested in study abroad, answer routine questions about approved programs, and assist students with additional research as necessary.
  • Explain college policies and refer students to the appropriate office or field group as necessary.
  • Maintain complete and accurate records in Terra Dotta.
  • For assigned study abroad programs: Review applications and manage the approval status.
  • Advise students about post-acceptance requirements.
  • Collect and track student forms and requirements and follow up with students as necessary.
  • Provide pre-departure and re-entry support.
  • Advise students on visa application requirements for assigned programs.
  • Ensure that program mission, values, guidelines, policies, and procedures are implemented and maintained.
  • Continue serving as adviser and primary point of contact for students while abroad.
  • Counsel returnees on credit transfer, readjustment issues, campus activities, volunteer opportunities, and career options.
  • Collect and organize content (photos, videos, testimonials, student stories) featuring Pitzer-run Programs
  • Collect and organize program materials in internal Box file structure
  • Digitize and organize student Independent Study Projects, consulting with college archivists as necessary
  • Review processes and recommend changes to incorporate best practices as appropriate into administrative, recruitment, marketing, and education components.
  • Identify service improvement opportunities that better enable programs to achieve goals and objectives and expand student access.
  • Generate data and provide assistance with reports.
  • Support office event organization and implementation.
  • Serve as backup with reception duties, as needed, answering telephone calls, greeting visitors, answering routine questions, scheduling appointments, and responding to emails sent to the general study abroad email address.
  • Other related duties as assigned
