About The Position

Estrada Consulting, Inc. is seeking a hands-on technical lead for a six-month, onsite data engineering engagement at a university advanced materials research center in Clearfield, Utah. The center builds and tests high-temperature carbon fiber composite parts for aerospace. Its 3D printers, ovens, furnaces, microscopes, and mechanical and thermal test machines store data locally on the equipment. The engagement will build a materials database by creating pipelines to extract machine logs, sensor readings, and microscope images, land the data in Azure Blob Storage in an Azure Government account, and stage and model it in Databricks for research analysis. The project lead will plan work with the center's staff, prioritize data sources against the data dictionary, lead weekly partner meetings, and contribute directly to engineering the pipelines and data model. The role also owns security and permissions in the Azure Government environment and prepares the center to operate the system after the engagement through intern mentoring, training, recordings, documentation, and handover. The arrangement is onsite, full time (40 hours per week). The six-month W2 contract may be renewable and is contingent on contract award. The expected start is January 2027. The hourly rate is $65 to $90, depending on experience. U.S. citizenship is required. The candidate's name and resume will be included in ECI's proposal, along with references who can verify data engineering experience.

Requirements

  • At least three years of data engineering experience.
  • Experience leading technical projects, including planning, weekly client status updates, prioritization, and deliverable acceptance.
  • Experience with data ingestion, data pipelines, data modeling, and monitoring.
  • Cloud experience with Azure, AWS, or GCP, including IaaS and PaaS services.
  • Experience with data security, permission management, and secure networking.
  • U.S. citizen able to work onsite in Clearfield, Utah, full time.
  • References who can verify data engineering experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Databricks and Apache Spark.
  • Experience with Microsoft Azure, including Azure Government, Blob Storage, and Azure Data Factory or Databricks Workflows.
  • Data lake or lakehouse experience, including Delta Lake.
  • Experience training and mentoring student interns or junior staff.
  • Experience with manufacturing, laboratory, sensor, or industrial machine data.
  • PMP, Scrum, or similar certification.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and track project work, prioritizing high-priority data sources during the first three months and the remaining sources afterward.
  • Lead weekly partner meetings, report progress and risks, and obtain review and acceptance of deliverables.
  • Work with researchers and staff to design data extraction for each machine and refine existing extraction scripts.
  • Set technical direction for data staging, the production data model, orchestration, and alerting on Databricks.
  • Own security and permissions in the Azure Government environment.
  • Train and mentor student interns.
  • Lead the system handover through training sessions, recordings, and documentation.
