About The Position

Join University of Chicago Medicine, as an Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) in the Emergency Department. In this role, the Advanced Practice Provider will see large volumes of patients each day, with a primary focus on Emergency Severity Index's 3-5, simple laceration repairs, digital blocks, slit-lamp eye exams, pelvic exams, and splinting. The Advanced Practice Provider will need to remain flexible as the ED volumes fluctuate. This position is a 100% onsite opportunity. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area. The Advanced Practice Provider will be responsible for comprehensive direct patient care management and will manage a caseload of patients by exercising autonomous decision making in the assessment, diagnosis, and initiation of delegated medical treatments. The APP will provide healthcare and patient services that may include educational, research, and clinical nursing specialist support, as well as complete administrative activities under the direction and supervision of the Director/leadership. The APP has acquired the knowledge, skills, and judgment necessary to assist the physician through organized instruction and supervised practice.

Requirements

  • Master's of Science in Nursing (for Nurse Practitioner)
  • Current and/or eligibility for State of Illinois RN and APN licensure/registration (for Nurse Practitioner)
  • Must be certified as a Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurse's Credentialing Center or American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (for Nurse Practitioner)
  • Must have or be able to qualify for Illinois and DEA prescribing numbers (for Nurse Practitioner)
  • Emergency Department experience as a Nurse Practitioner (for Nurse Practitioner)
  • Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant educational program (for Physician Assistant)
  • Certification in ACLS and by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) and current and/or eligibility for State of Illinois licensure / registration (for Physician Assistant)
  • Emergency Department experience (for Physician Assistant)

Responsibilities

  • See large volumes of patients each day, with a primary focus on Emergency Severity Index's 3-5, simple laceration repairs, digital blocks, slit-lamp eye exams, pelvic exams, and splinting

  • Responsible for comprehensive direct patient care management

  • Taking patient history, conducting examinations, diagnosing illness
  • Pre and post-operative patient evaluation and ordering and interpreting laboratory tests
  • Ability to exercise autonomy in medical decision-making, provide a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic services
