About The Position

Requirements

• Excellent oral and written communication skills, cultural sensitivity, empathy, and cooperative and collaborative problem-solving approach.

• Experience with or understanding of State, Federal, and Tribal Fishing and Hunting regulations.
• Strong observation skills and attention to detail in both field and data work.

• Knowledge of wildlife biology, habitats, and ecological relationships.
• Experience with data collection, management, and reporting.
• Familiarity with GIS and GPS tools, or willingness to learn.
• Ability to navigate and work safely in remote outdoor environments.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage time and multiple responsibilities.
• Professional judgment, integrity, and ability to maintain confidentiality, especially when working with culturally sensitive knowledge.
• Flexibility to work outside typical hours when needed for fieldwork or seasonal activities.
• Frequent hiking on and off trail in steep, uneven terrain while carrying field gear.
• Operation of 4WD vehicles, ATVs, and other field equipment.
• Use of hand and power tools when needed.
• Periods of standing, walking, and working at a computer for data entry, analysis, and report writing.
• A Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in Wildlife Biology or Wildlife Management, Natural Resource Sciences (Wildlife Directed Studies), or closely related field.
• At least one (1) year of field work preferably with a focus in wildlife, natural resources, or related work (for Level I).
• Four (4) years of technical professional experience in the natural resources field, including fish and wildlife experience (for Level II).
• Must have and maintain a valid and unrestricted Washington State driver’s license.
• Selected candidate must agree to be subject to the Tribe's Controlled Substance and Alcohol Testing Policy to include pre-employment screening.
• Must be able to pass a thorough pre-employment background investigation.

Nice To Haves

• Experience working with Tribal communities, or a demonstrated commitment to working respectfully within Tribal contexts, is strongly preferred (for Level I).
• Basic mechanical knowledge is desired i.e. the ability to change a tire, or jump start a vehicle.

Responsibilities

• Conduct fieldwork, including terrestrial, aquatic and drone surveys, to monitor culturally important species, predator prey interactions, and threatened and endangered species.
• Observe and document wildlife, habitats, and seasonal patterns, recognizing the importance of long-term relationships with the land.
• Collect and manage ecological data using sound scientific methods, while honoring and supporting the inclusion of Traditional Ecological Knowledge where appropriate.
• Participate in meetings, gatherings, and intertribal efforts that support the protection of wildlife and natural resources.
• Assist in caring for Tribal lands through routine site visits, monitoring habitat conditions and changes over time.
• Work alongside Tribal programs to support shared goals related to subsistence, cultural practices, and conservation.
• Share information through reports, presentations, and outreach in ways that are clear, respectful, and accessible to Tribal members and the broader community.
• Safely navigate a remote and rugged landscape with the ability to maintain a vehicle.
• Expand the capacity of the wildlife program by developing and implementing emerging technologies including AI, eDNA, and remote sensing.
• Support the development of Wildlife Management Plans that reflect Tribal values, and a long-term stewardship perspective.
• Collaborate with GIS staff to map and understand wildlife movement, habitat use, and culturally significant places, with care for sensitive information.
• Assist in the development of Tribal policies, codes, and guidance related to wildlife and habitat protection.
• Respond to wildlife concerns in ways that emphasize respect, balance, and coexistence.
• Assist with developing educational materials that reflect the Tribe’s relationship with wildlife and promote stewardship values.
• Perform duties from time to time which may not be related to their regular responsibilities.
• Other duties as assigned.
