About The Position

The Public Utilities Department is seeking a Water Treatment Maintenance Mechanic/Operator to be responsible for performing a wide variety of skilled work in the maintenance and repair of water treatment equipment and Facilities. Work involves performing tasks to maintain efficient operations of Water Treatment Plant. Work assignments may arise as a result of equipment breakdowns, inspections or preventative maintenance procedures. Must be familiar with federal, state and local regulations, laws and standards regarding Water treatment. This position is open until filled.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of or ability to learn and implement the County’s CMMS software (CityWorks).
  • Working knowledge of the operation and cleaning of a water treatment plant and distribution system equipment and facilities.
  • Working knowledge of the techniques, tools and materials used in the maintenance and repair of industrial machinery and equipment, including large capacity pumps, motors, valves, gear boxes, compressors, generators, etc.
  • Working knowledge of safety rules, codes and regulations pertaining to the work.
  • Working knowledge of the methods and precautions in storing and handling sodium hypochlorite, sodium hydroxide, Ferric chloride and other hazardous chemicals.
  • Ability to maintain, adjust and repair industrial machinery and equipment.
  • Ability to give and follow oral and written instruction; communicate effectively.
  • Must be able to perform the basic life functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.
  • Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally; and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Must possess visual acuity necessary to inspect schematic drawings, prepare and analyze figures and data, perform extensive reading and operate a computer terminal, laptop computer or mobile tablet.
  • The nature of the work may also require the incumbent to use power tools and noise producing tools and equipment, drive motorized vehicles and heavy equipment and enter confined spaces.
  • High school diploma or its equivalent, plus specialized training (recent acceptable formal courses of instruction) in water treatment and plant operations.
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
  • Possession of C-Surface Operator certification by the State of North Carolina or the ability to obtain within 12 months of employment required.
  • Possession of North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) or the ability to obtain within 18 months of employment required.

Nice To Haves

  • Possession of Maintenance Technologist certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs maintenance tasks at the 18 MGD Timothy G.Broome Water Treatment Plant.
  • Complete work and documents work completed with a computerized construction management and maintenance software (CMMS).
  • Maintains asset inventory, condition and repair records in CMMS.
  • Schedules and performs basic maintenance (including preventative) and troubleshoots a variety of electrical equipment related to pumping systems, including motors, manual and automatic control centers, panel- boards and switch indicators and remote control equipment; troubleshoots and performs minor repairs on electric motors, as required.
  • Removes, repairs and completely overhauls pumps, motors, gear drives, screens, chemical feed pumps, filters valves, blowers and other types of equipment related to water treatment plants and pumping facilities.
  • Operates all equipment necessary to regulate the flow of water through water treatment plant processes.
  • Responsible for testing water at various stages of treatment; interpreting and adjusting meters and gauges; performing chemical and biological laboratory analysis; completing records and maintaining plant operation logs.
  • Operates various trucks and other equipment to complete preventative maintenance and repairs, including forklifts and dump trucks.
  • Utilizes a variety of mechanical, welding, plumbing and machinists’ tools to fabricate, rebuild, strengthen and maintain various parts and pieces of plant equipment.
  • Orders supplies and materials as required for completion of various work assignments; prepares and maintains related documents and records.
  • Interprets performance data, evaluates testing data and performance, and maintains performance data records and preventative maintenance schedules.
  • Performs routine housekeeping chores inside and outside the plant and conducts regular site safety inspections.
  • Performs duties as a Water Treatment Plant Operator.
  • Occasionally fills-in for water treatment plant shift operator (noon to midnight or midnight to noon).
  • Performs call back work and standby duty on a rotating basis as required; hours may include holidays, evenings, weekends and split shifts.
  • Performs other duties, as assigned.
