About The Position
Excel Academy is a network of six schools in Massachusetts and Rhode Island serving students in grades 5–12. Its teachers deliver effective, high-quality, rigorous college-preparatory instruction designed to foster student success. Teachers who thrive at Excel are entrepreneurial instructors and eager learners who value frequent, high-quality feedback and bring passion and expertise in their content area. The Middle School Special Education Teacher/Learning Specialist provides daily instructional support to students on their caseload, including inclusion teaching as needed. The role collaborates with general education teachers to differentiate and adapt instruction, ensures special education services align with student achievement goals and comply with applicable regulations, manages required student documentation, and communicates regularly with families. The teacher also contributes to the broader school community and supports the school's mission. The listed starting salary is $60,000–$93,000, commensurate with experience. The position is for the 2027–2028 school year. A bachelor's degree is required; a master's degree is preferred. Prior teaching experience in an urban public or charter school is preferred but not required, and a license or certification is not required before the start date.

Nice To Haves
- Master's degree.
- At least two years of teaching experience in an urban public school or charter school setting.
- Advanced proficiency in Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, or another language commonly spoken by students and families.
- Being a first-generation college graduate or having grown up low-income.
- Applicants who share points of intersection with Excel's students are preferred.
Responsibilities
- Teach daily instructional support lessons to students on the caseload, using time outside core academic classes.
- Serve as an inclusion teacher as needed to support students with high needs.
- Work with general education teachers to differentiate curriculum, create effective accommodations, and modify curriculum when appropriate.
- Ensure work with students with special needs aligns with the school's academic goals for student achievement.
- Ensure special education services are implemented in compliance with federal and state regulations.
- Manage paperwork, including IEPs, 504s, Child Study Records of Accommodations, teacher input questionnaires, IEP progress reports, and subject-area checklists for MCAS.
- Maintain regular communication with students' parents, guardians, and families.
- Provide coverage as needed during non-instructional time.
- Contribute productively to the Excel Academy community and do what is needed to uphold the school's mission.
