About The Position

Requirements

• High school diploma, GED, or higher degree if hired after January 1, 2025.
• Successful completion of an accredited Surgical Technology training program, or five additional years of Surgical Technologist experience in lieu of the training program.
• Certification as a Surgical Technologist if hired after January 1, 2025.
• American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS).
• Two years of experience as a Surgical Technologist in an acute multi-specialty environment, demonstrating independent performance across a variety of surgical specialties.
• Ability to communicate clearly and accurately with patients, healthcare professionals, and staff.
• Ability to scrub for procedures without assistance in assigned areas.
• Ability to take call independently and respond for all specialties in assigned areas.
• Advanced knowledge and practice of aseptic and surgical technique.
• Advanced knowledge of operating-room emergency situations.
• Critical-thinking skills.
• Knowledge of the surgical environment, including traffic patterns and sterile-field contamination.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrate compliance with the Code of Conduct and compliance policies; address compliance questions or concerns and report suspected violations.
• Maintain aseptic technique according to Surgical Services policies and procedures.
• Anticipate the surgeon’s needs by reviewing preference cards, obtaining appropriate supplies before cases, and staying attentive to case progression.
• Prepare supplies, room setup, and equipment for cases; maintain an orderly instrument table and surgical field.
• Verify and label medications and irrigations on the back table with the nurse.
• Maintain and document accurate sponge, needle, and instrument counts with the nurse.
• Accurately identify surgical specimens and transfer them to the nurse.
• Prepare instruments for cleaning and re-sterilization.
• Assist with putting away supplies and turning over rooms.
• Lead unit-level projects and implement changes to address safety or clinical quality deficiencies.
• Help maximize efficiency of the surgical lineup and adhere to surgical start times.
• Use judgment when opening and using supplies, and help develop processes to contain costs and reduce waste.
• Stay current with intraoperative techniques and equipment through unit-based and continuing education.
• Serve as a role model, coach team members to anticipate resources, and precept new staff and students.
• Participate in department projects and assist with developing department policies, procedures, and protocols.
• Accept responsibilities only within scope of practice.
• Work at alternate sites when required.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
