About The Position
This is a Research Assistant position for the 2026 Spring/Summer Semester at the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Social Sciences, School of International Development and Global Studies. The position is classified as a Research Assistant (CUPE) and is a research-focused role. The total work hours are 130, with an hourly rate of $31.89 for undergraduate students and $50.25 for graduate students (2024-2025 rates, excluding vacation and statutory pay). The academic year runs from September 1 to August 31. The language of work is English and French. All University of Ottawa employees must complete mandatory legislated training. The hiring process will follow the CUPE 2626 collective agreement. Requirements
- Knowledge of artisanal and small-scale mining is important.
- Undergraduate students will be paid at the lower rate; while graduate students will be paid at the higher rate.
- These rates do not included vacation pay nor statutory pay.
- These rates will be applied until a new collective agreement is ratified.
- Retro will be paid after the ratification.
Nice To Haves
- Knowledge of the cobalt sector in the DRC would be an advantage.
Responsibilities
- Wide-ranging literature review on relationships between the artisanal and small-scale mining sector and the Large-scale mining sector in the DRC, with a focus on the cobalt sector.
- Analysis and summary of texts.
