About The Position
The Mechanic Helper is an entry-level service support position in a shop environment. The role supports skilled technicians and service operations while providing hands-on experience in the heavy equipment industry, with the opportunity to develop skills toward a Heavy Equipment Technician role. The position involves troubleshooting, repairing, reconditioning, and servicing Caterpillar and other Empire allied machines, systems, and power train components. It requires diagnosing machine electrical, hydraulic, and power train malfunctions and failures, identifying root causes with electronic tools, schematics, and other troubleshooting methods, and communicating equipment conditions, status, and recommendations to clients, associates, and management. This is a safety-sensitive position. The work environment includes moving mechanical parts, high or precarious places, outdoor weather, wet or humid conditions, extreme cold and heat, and usually loud noise. Multiple shifts are available; the schedule will be provided by the leader. Work may involve overtime and travel to remote locations as needed.
Requirements
- At least six months of related experience in a similar role and environment.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid, current driver’s license.
- Ability to speak, read, write, and comprehend English.
- Ability to successfully complete the eTRAIN skills assessment.
- Excellent client service skills.
- Own and maintain required personal tools.
- Basic computer and internet knowledge, including knowledge of operating scanning and diagnostic tools.
- Knowledge and skills to operate and understand diagnostic equipment, including computerized instrumentation.
- Ability to communicate verbally and in writing about equipment conditions, problems, recommendations, and repair processes.
- Ability to work cooperatively and communicate effectively.
- Knowledge of CAT machine components and systems.
- Acceptable attendance in accordance with company standards and requirements.
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the job, including regularly sitting, using hands, talking, hearing, standing, walking, reaching, climbing or balancing, stooping or kneeling, and lifting or moving up to 60 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities including close, distance, and peripheral vision.
- Appropriate manner, conduct, and grooming in accordance with company policy.
Nice To Haves
- At least one year of heavy equipment technician experience, preferably in a dealership environment.
- Caterpillar work experience.
- Vocational school degree in Diesel.
Responsibilities
- Troubleshoot and diagnose equipment malfunctions and failures.
- Repair, recondition, and maintain equipment and components.
- Maintain good client relations and support corporate marketing objectives.
- Prepare service reports.
- Plan and control the cost of repair jobs.
- Maintain company equipment in a clean and orderly condition.
- Work safely and comply with applicable safety policies, company policies, procedures, and standards.
- Own and maintain required personal tools.
- Learn and use Empire, Caterpillar, and allied product procedures and systems.
- Maintain a current MSHA card if the work area requires it.
- Provide on-the-job training to technicians and helpers as assigned.
- Make warranty recommendations.
- Communicate with appropriate individuals to clarify instructions or discuss job scope or progress.
- Work overtime as needed.
- Travel to remote locations as needed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
