About The Position

Requirements

• Meet the basic education requirements for Horticulture Series 0437: a degree in horticulture or a related basic plant science discipline including at least 30 semester hours in basic plant sciences, with at least 16 semester hours in horticultural subjects; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Meet the basic education requirements for Landscape Architecture Series 0807: a bachelor’s or higher degree in landscape architecture or landscape design; or qualifying experience under professional leadership and guidance that includes original landscape design in place of education.
• For GS-14 qualification, have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-13 in the Federal Service, leading or managing horticulture or landscape programs, overseeing technical aspects of garden or landscape planning, improvement, and maintenance projects, and working with teams and partners to resolve competing work priorities and resource needs.
• Promotion candidates must meet qualification requirements, including one year of time-in-grade at the next lower grade, within 30 days of the announcement closing date.
• Pass a pre-employment background investigation.
• May be required to complete a probationary period, including a 12-month supervisory probationary period.
• Maintain a bank account for direct deposit or electronic transfer.
• Males born after December 31, 1959, must be registered with Selective Service.
• Submit transcripts and, where applicable, evidence of U.S. equivalency for foreign education used to qualify.

Responsibilities

• Direct horticulture and landscape operations; establish priorities, operating procedures, and technical standards; evaluate resource needs and program effectiveness; and recommend improvements.
• Direct horticulture, landscape planning, and operations activities through subordinate supervisors and staff.
• Represent the organization and coordinate with internal teams, professional organizations, governmental partners, and external stakeholders on activities affecting gardens and landscapes.
• Direct emergency preparedness, response, recovery, and continuity activities for Smithsonian Gardens’ horticulture and landscape operations.
• Develop and implement emergency procedures; coordinate with emergency management, safety, security, facilities, and operational personnel; and establish priorities for protecting assets.
