About The Position

The High School Equivalency (HSE) Program seeks highly motivated, energetic, and student-focused professionals to support adult learners in achieving their educational goals. Positions may include a combination of in-person classroom instruction, remote support, and distance learning based on student and program needs. The ideal candidate is organized, dependable, and passionate about student success.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (Education Preferred)
  • Obtain and maintain New York State Education Department (NYSED) Adult Education Certification as required.
  • Complete fingerprinting and background check.
  • Obtain DASA (Dignity for All Students Act) Certification.
  • Complete 14 hours of mandatory professional development training each year.
  • Meet all additional employment requirements established by the Syracuse City School District Human Resources Department.

Responsibilities

  • Provide instruction and support to adult learners preparing for the High School Equivalency examination in all content areas, including literacy, mathematics, science, social studies, writing, calculator usage, and test-taking strategies.
  • Assist with student intake, orientation, and enrollment processes.
  • Administer and/or assist with initial assessments and testing.
  • Develop and implement prescriptive learning plans based on assessment results and student goals.
  • Provide instruction in classroom, remote, and distance-learning environments.
  • Monitor student attendance, participation, and academic progress.
  • Maintain accurate student records and documentation.
  • Conduct regular student follow-up and outreach to support retention and persistence.
  • Create a positive, welcoming, and inclusive learning environment.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and program staff to support student achievement.
  • Participate in training and implementation of the National External Diploma Program (NEDP) as assigned. Staff may be required to become trained in NEDP and support eligible students pursuing a high school diploma through this alternative pathway.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support program operations and student success.
