About The Position

The Crossing Guard / Traffic Control Attendant plays a key role in ensuring the safe and efficient arrival and dismissal of students each day. This position directs vehicle traffic, assists pedestrians in crossing designated traffic lanes, and helps maintain an orderly flow of cars through the school's parking lots. The successful candidate is safety-minded, dependable, observant, and comfortable interacting courteously with students, families, staff, and visitors.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Ability to remain alert and exercise sound judgment in a busy environment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and courteously with children and adults.
  • Dependable, punctual, and able to work independently.
  • Must be able to commit to student safety
  • Must have strong situational awareness
  • Ability to have a calm demeanor under pressure
  • Must be professional and reliable
  • Must have good judgment and decisiveness
  • Must be friendly and respectful, demonstrating customer service skills.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions throughout the school year.
  • Ability to see and hear approaching vehicles and pedestrians.
  • Ability to use arm motions and voice commands to direct traffic safely.
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in traffic control, crossing guard duties, security, customer service, or a related field is helpful but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safety of students, families, staff, and visitors from vehicle traffic during arrival and dismissal.
  • Direct vehicle traffic into and through the school's parking lots according to established traffic patterns.
  • Control pedestrian crossings, stopping vehicle traffic when pedestrians are crossing and stopping pedestrians when vehicles are directed to proceed.
  • Coordinate with other traffic personnel and security officers to maintain a safe and efficient flow of vehicles.
  • Monitor traffic conditions and adjust the pace of vehicle movement to prioritize pedestrian safety while minimizing congestion.
  • Clearly communicate with drivers and pedestrians using hand signals, verbal directions, and other established procedures.
  • Assist in maintaining orderly drop-off and pick-up operations.
  • Report safety concerns, traffic hazards, accidents, or unusual situations to school administration promptly.
  • Represent the school in a professional, courteous, and helpful manner at all times.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned in support of arrival and dismissal operations.
