About The Position

Requirements

• Proficiency in basic written and spoken English.
• Graduation from an appropriately accredited school of professional nursing, or qualifying nursing education under the stated VA provisions.
• Current, full, active, and unrestricted registered professional nurse licensure in a U.S. state, territory, commonwealth, or the District of Columbia; a Graduate Nurse Technician exception may apply to candidates pursuing licensure.
• Meet the applicable VA Nurse grade and level education, experience, and dimension criteria for the grade assigned.
• One full and unrestricted license from any U.S. state or territory.
• U.S. citizenship, except that non-citizens may be appointed only when qualified U.S. citizens cannot be recruited in accordance with VA policy.
• Pass required pre-employment drug screening, background/security investigation, and physical evaluation/examination; comply with the seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and any applicable probationary period.
• Ability to meet the physical demands of the position, including visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, manual dexterity, and potentially prolonged periods of walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing; transferring patients and objects may be required.

Responsibilities

• Provide and supervise direct patient care, taking responsibility for all elements of the nursing process.
• Coordinate care with a focus on patient education, self-management, and customer satisfaction across the continuum of care.
• Administer medications and procedures according to established policies and guidelines.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to influence care outcomes and support safe transitions that reflect the Veteran’s goals of care.
• Provide competent, evidence-based procedural care to patients undergoing therapeutic and diagnostic endoscopy procedures, including inpatients and outpatients.
• Oversee licensed vocational nurses and health or nursing assistants as appropriate to the procedural setting.
• Assess patients’ physical and mental status before procedures; educate patients about procedural and post-procedural care; document interventions and findings; and report changes.
• Perform functions that may include pre-procedure assessments, post-procedure recovery, and assisting physicians during procedures.
• Promote health, wellness, disease prevention, and chronic care management through care, education, coordination, and coaching.
• Assist with nursing education, orientation, competencies, quality improvement, and outcomes utilization.
• Provide constructive feedback to peers, share educational findings and ideas, and foster a supportive environment for professional development.
• Question clinical practices and participate in strategies that sustain evidence-based practice.
• Maintain proficiency in maintenance, cleaning, and preparation of endoscopy-specific equipment.
• Recognize changes in patient-care situations and initiate appropriate emergency responses.
• Adapt to changes in the daily schedule and, if assigned call, follow facility response-time policies.
