About The Position
American Stage seeks a Master Electrician/Board Op for its 2025–26 season. The role manages the electrical needs of each production, including shop preparation, load-in, setup, execution, maintenance, and operation. The position works with the Lighting Designer, Director of Production, Technical Director, Assistant Lighting Designer, Programmer, and Stage Management to prepare and execute lighting designs, coordinate equipment and crew needs, and support safe, orderly production operations. Work is onsite for a minimum of three weeks per show, from lighting hang through opening. The production schedule includes plot delivery, hang/cable/patch, designer run, focus, programming, technical rehearsals, final dress, previews, and opening. The opening is Friday of the third contract week. Compensation is $2,500–$3,500 per show, based on experience. This independent contractor position is exempt from benefits provided to full- and part-time staff. The contractor is expected to follow American Stage Theatre Company’s code of conduct.
Requirements
- Proficiency with and ability to set up and program ETC-family consoles.
- Familiarity with installing, programming, and troubleshooting conventional and intelligent fixtures.
- Ability to hang, cable, program, focus, and maintain approximately 175–200 fixtures per show.
- Ability to work safely at various heights using Genie lifts, ladders, suspension grids, and scaffolding.
- In-depth understanding of networking and signal flow.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds.
- Understanding of theatrical best practices for hanging, circuiting, cable management, focusing, lamp changes, and standard stage-lighting accessories.
- Creative problem-solving and troubleshooting ability.
- Team-oriented and collaborative attitude.
- Excellent communication skills.
Nice To Haves
- Experience with QLab programming.
- Knowledge of Clear-Com equipment.
Responsibilities
- Work with the Lighting Designer to review the light plot, confirm equipment availability, and remain within the rental budget.
- Prepare the lighting plot for hang and focus and ensure it is actualized.
- Establish circuiting and cabling layout plans.
- Analyze the light plot and coordinate with the Technical Director on the location and setup of lighting equipment.
- Maintain necessary lighting paperwork.
- Work with the Director of Production, Technical Director, and Stage Management to efficiently load in and strike the show.
- Supervise all Electrics Calls during load-in.
- Participate in focus and programming calls with the Lighting Designer, ALD, and Programmer.
- Communicate and coordinate crew needs with the Director of Production.
- Consult with the Lighting Designer and Director of Production on equipment needs.
- Organize and maintain the rental lighting inventory.
- Ensure secure and safe rigging of lighting instruments.
- Wire practicals or scenic pieces that include lighting units.
- Identify training needs of associated crew.
- Manage company safety on stage in relation to lighting elements.
- Leave the performance space clean and orderly.
- Set up and program ETC-family lighting consoles.
- Install, program, and troubleshoot conventional and intelligent fixtures.
- Hang, cable, program, focus, and maintain approximately 175–200 fixtures per show.
