About The Position

Requirements

• U.S. citizenship, except that non-citizens may be appointed when recruiting qualified citizens is not possible under VA policy.
• Proficiency in written and spoken English.
• At least one year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, demonstrating knowledge of complex procedures, related pharmacology, acute disorders and diseases, their effects on organs, and treatment methods.
• Ability to interpret testing data and evaluate critical information for surgeons and other medical staff during procedures.
• Knowledge of nervous-system anatomy and physiology and of the relationship between EEG and evoked-potential testing and disease or health states.
• Knowledge of behavioral assessment during seizures to ensure adequate recordings during seizure discharges.
• Knowledge of advanced EEG and related equipment, including brain-mapping equipment, video EEG telemetry systems with seizure-detection computers, and spike-analysis software.
• Knowledge of anticonvulsant medications and their effects on EEG, as well as other frequently used pharmaceuticals.
• Ability to adapt neurodiagnostic devices, parameters, and procedures to complex, unusual, and often critical situations.
• Pass a pre-employment physical evaluation and comply with the VA seasonal influenza vaccination program.
• Be subject to a background/security investigation and, if tentatively selected for a testing-designated position, pre-appointment urinalysis for illegal drug use.
• Serve a one- or two-year trial period, subject to written certification for continued employment after the trial period.
• Complete the required application and onboarding processes and provide acceptable identification for employment verification.

Nice To Haves

• EEG technician registration and one to two years of experience.
• Licensure or certification as evidence of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities; desirable at GS-6 or above but not required.
• Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification.
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.

Responsibilities

• Provide neurophysiology services to patients in outpatient and inpatient settings, including intensive care units, the operating room, isolation, and psychiatry.
• Independently perform a full range of EEG procedures, including complex and non-routine studies in demanding environments such as research, intraoperative monitoring, or intensive care monitoring.
• Tailor procedures to the clinical questions being evaluated and use additional monitors, electrodes, or other devices as clinically indicated.
• Interpret study results and bring subtle abnormalities that may require intervention to the attention of the physician or supervisor.
• Highlight clinically important portions of recordings for review by the clinical neurophysiologist.
• Accurately describe patient behavior concurrent with recordings, including behavior during seizure attacks.
• Inform health care staff about testing indications, the value and limitations of tests, possible outcomes, and laboratory policies.
